I doubt if anyone will question the drunk/dementia link.
Its all too common anyone with slurred speach or anyone stumbling is a drunk. My daughter and I both suffer Reactive hypoglycemia , she had been swimming and on her way home her blood sugar plummeted. Her BF at the time didnt know what to do and panicked, she couldnt stand she slumped down and slid to the floor she says she remembers seeing nice shoes walking past and hearing people tut tut.. Then a pair of DM's came into view and a punk type girl asked if she was ok.. She remembers the girl yelling at someone for a can of coke and then helping her drink it.
But how many people thought she was drunk?
I once found a man in the park he was laying next to a bench and at first I though he was drunk but as I leaned over he smelled funny like nail polish remover..
Realising he was diabetic I called for an ambulance.
I have wonder how many people thought he was drunk and just walked past..
I have also cared for a lady with MS she told me she has been abused by her neighbours who put her slurred speech and stumbles down to drink..
All too often people jump to the first conculsion, yes it could be drink but it could easily be something else.
People with Alzhiemers /dememtia often have aphasia that can cause halting or slurred speech they can have mobility problems cauing stumbles or hesitant gait. They are not all drinkers these are common symptoms of the illness without drink.
Yes drink can make it worse they same way it can make any illness worse but if the gutter media start shouting its drink that gives you dementia, all dmetia patients are drunk the understanding of the illness will take a leap back into the dark ages. Its bad enough now we dont need more stigma.
