Now is the time the weather keeps me busy! Having most of my vegetables in pots and planters means keeping a constant eye on them to keep them watered. I have tried various methods, including automated watering, but nothing has really worked better than checking them at least three times a day.

There is some work involved but the rewards are well worth it.

My dad is a keen gardener. He has so many plants, flowers and trees growing in his garden: it's gorgeous.
I have inherited his love of nature. Even though I don't garden, I do have potted plants and a vase of flowers in my apartment. And I enjoy watching the odd gardening programme on TV. I also love walking throiugh fields and meadows in summertime. I take the odd photo of stunning flowers and the suchlike, too. Plus, at this time of year is it truly paradise on earth.
Yesterday we collected more than 50 japanese beetles.. Today is cloudier and cooler, so there are not as many around. I do think we probably average 20 a day or more.. Oy.. it's really bad! We already put milky spore in the dirt last year, but it can take a few years before it spreads enough to work... we're also using neem sprays on the plants in the sun (they love sunbathing and humping in the sun)... I also just made some type of garlic spray because supposedly garlic can be a deterrent. lol will try whatever I have to so they stop devouring the plants..

That's one thing that I don't miss. I have never seen one here.

I think I saw a map the other day... and yes, Florida was not in the zone yet. I'm not sure why not because they love the heat!
We have a few lizards locally but not enough to make much of a difference to insect life. I think much more will be eaten by our frogs and toads as they are far more common. Last year I even had a resident frog in the greenhouse for a month or so. I will keep an eye out not that the weather has changed to rain as they may show themselves. I often get them in the garden.
I don't see a lot of frogs... every now and then we have tree frogs, though, which are so cute! lol We have more than enough insects... I leave most of them be, but these Japanese Beetles are no friend of mine!
It tends to be almost deathly silent here at night sometimes. During the daytime there are so many birds it is very noisy.
I usually have insects making sounds at night! The silent moments are sometimes in the late evenings when things are calming down and right before the bugs decide to come out to party lol
I noticed yesterday that squatters have moved into the garden. There is now a colony of bees in the composter. They are slightly out the way and, although only a couple of yards away from the shed door, they seem placid enough so they should not create problems and may well deter the cats from the bottom of the garden. They are good for the plants though so hopefully a welcome addition.
Now that the rains have returned my bananas are doing much better. imgur.com/L2sNZqy
Your banana trees are different than what I know Karen:
There are so many different kinds Annie. Some are fuller like the one you show. Mine are usually much better looking but the drought that we have just come out of has really done as number of the leaves.
Oh no... our redbud seems to be dying now. It was doing so well, but it seems the area it is in has very poor drainage, and we had very heavy rains recently. We dug it up to try to rescue it, and we're going to amend the soil further to see if it will help. We're also going to plant it much higher up.... When we dug it up there was so much water just forming in there. There is a lot of clay.. so that is the reason.
I'm pretty sad about my tree... It's so beautiful, and I feel terrible it has been suffocating for days. I hope it will be able to rebound. I know it may not look good for the rest of the year after all this stress.. but maybe it will make it and be back to normal next year.
