Andrea has tried to set up our garden, so we have something flowering all 365 days. That's quite a challenge given our climate.
That is something I'd like to accomplish, too. It's tough for us because we actually have too much shade from all the trees lol so we're limited on flowering bushes that will actually flower without sun. We removed the oak tree and opened up a good stretch of land that will get more sun now, so that's where we're planting some of the newer things (crape myrtle, red bud, and the lilac potentially).
The woods leave our garden in a lot of shade until after lunch. Of course the part of the garden that is wooded struggles. But we won't remove any trees.

Same. I only removed the tree for being right next to the house, but it turned out to have more benefits now... more variety in sunny plants lol

Trees too close can cause damp. They prevent the sun from hitting that side of the house. I had that many years ago. I only found out as the new owners did it.
We pulled out a bunch of small plants sprouting in our flowerbed near the house... looked like mostly maple tree sprouts lol we have a whole bunch in front of the house, so their seeds were trying to take over!
We will likely trim some bushes today. Have to cut away parts touching the house.
We were attempting to grow wildflowers at the mailbox, and it's taking forever for anything to grow. Grass keeps making its way in there instead while we wait lol so I keep having to pull out the grass to keep room for wildflowers. I have only spotted maybe a handful of what looks to be future wildflowers.... I wonder if maybe we didn't sprinkle enough seeds or if the birds ate most of them. We did keep seeing birds pecking at the dirt up there after we added the seeds.
My banana's are still holding on even with the drought that we are in. The rain we were suppose to get over the weekend never really came. Just a trace is all we got. This week looks better for some though.
All this rain is now boosting things in the garden. The tomatillo I evicted from the greenhouse a while ago has survived and is now coming into flower. It's time to re-orginise now as my cucumber seedlings are now ready to re-pot in the greenhouse so more will have to go out.
The rain does wonderful things for the garden and nature in general.
People often complain about the rain but if we didn't have rain, Britain would be like Lanzarote. In fact, I love British weather: and always will. Summer rain is wonderful to observe. The plants love it, too.
I am always surprised at just how quickly the water butts I have which are filled with rainwater which comes off the greenhouse run out as I use the water for the greenhouse plants. They soon drink lots of water in the summer heat.
I have now moved quite a few of my tomato and tomatillo plants out into the garden from the greenhouse now. If I'm not careful the greenhouse will soon get it's 'jungle' look lol. The tomatillos and some of the tomatoes are now in flower and one of my tomatillo plants has a couple of husks so no too long now.
After what seemed like a very long time some of the aubergine seeds I planted have germinated so I may soon have problems of space lol
My gardenias are flowering profusely. It smells amazing right when you open the front door or a window in our office, as they are next to the house. I wish they lasted longer than they do!
It looks like the dogwood might not flower this year, but we'll see if it does anything in the next month. It is still relatively young, so we might need to wait another year or two.... or possibly more. It didn't come from a seedling at least, which I have read can take anywhere from 5-10 years for the first flowering.
The redbud is doing really well so far, too. The leaves have been changing daily pretty much... a cascade of colors and mixtures (purples, reds, greens, and white). They are large and almost heart-shaped. Some look a little like lily pads... others are shaped like a corgi butt
It looks like more of the wildflowers might be starting to sprout now instead of just grass trying to take over. I keep plucking out the grass. It's still rather empty, though.. so I may need to sprinkle more seeds eventually. Going to just see how it goes, as I suppose this is a trial run for the seeds I bought. It was a different variety than the ones I used last time, which went really well. These are seeds of only native wildflowers to the area instead of a generic wildflower seed bag you can get from anywhere. I have no idea what is even coming up so far... some of them look nothing like what was listed on the bag, so maybe some is truly wild lol
When I checked the gooseberry and redcurrent plants at the weekend I confirmed the distinct lack of berries on both sets of plants. I was, unjustly I think, blaming the birds for the lack of redcurrents but I think the main reason is the plague of gooseberry sawfly last year. Although the little caterpillers did not affect the berries they did totally decimate the leaves. I think the plants are taking this year to recover and putting effort into the leaves so the plants are very green with few berries. It does seem like the poor spring weather (cool and wet) has sorted the sawfly for this year but I am keeping a close eye on the plants
The cherries on the cherry tree are coming along well but I will have to keep my eyes on that one with all the birds we have lol

I have flowering plants taking breaks after being damaged or being stressed from poor weather. It's a bummer when plants don't flower or fruit, but as long as they stay alive, then I'm happy enough ;p
Ugh... removed a bunch of Japanese beetles off my crepe myrtle. It's the most wonderful time of the year... It's getting a bit too tall for me to even reach everything, so I used a step ladder for some, and the others.. I will need a spray bottle with soap to get them lol
We will be spraying it with neem oil, but it keeps raining, and you must reapply afterward, so might need to wait until the rains are done.

I have never got a cherry off a tree. The birds get them all.

The worst part is they just poke at them and most falls to the ground.

Yes I noticed one yesterday. I try to get in first but end up eating them before they are fully ripe.
My Loganberries are coming on now. The birds don't pay too much attention to them. I did notice a couple of years ago that they were going though, then, a day or two later when I was just standing next to them a mouse crossed the garden, past my foot, and headed for them. I stamped my feet in anger and it ran off lol. I did feel a bit guilty to be honest.

The only thing I miss about a house - because I live in an apartment - is having a garden. I LOVE plants and flowers. I have several houseplants, though. They are in excellent condition. I only water them when it is needed and I re-pot them a few times a year.
I also love walking in the woods and fields: especially in springtime and summertime. I take photos of flowers when going on a rambling walk.
