It was so dull yesterday but I had my artificial sun. It's a bit of a lash up but I am gaining insight into using a growlamp with hydroponics. I have thought of a tidier, more efficient, solution but have an issue with space Here is the current setup with spinach and watercress growing. It really does cheer things up a bit when it is dull too:
Is that silver tub filled with water, to hold heat through the night?

The tub is grey. Just a supermarket storage box with holes cut in the top. There is silver reflective sheet around it to reduce the heating effect of the sunshine through the window in the warmer months. Ideally it could be taken off during the winter to improve the inner temperature but I don't think the effect would be that great anyway. Inside the tub there is water with dissolved nutrient up to a level about a couple of inches below the top (probably about 9 litres in this one). The plants are in basket pots so the roots grow down into the nutrient water. There is an air pump to the left which feeds air to air stones (like in a fish tank) which bubble up air disolving it into the water. The plants would die with root rot without it as they would drown. Roots need oxygen, even in soil. A point to remember in soggy gardens.
Ideally the lamp would be left on for 10 hours or so a day. but I don't like leaving it on when out. The pump does not need to be on all the time, I am tending to have it on while the lamp is on. The water loses oxygen more when the water is hotter. That is the main reason for using the reflective shield. I have found no problem with the nutrient water with algae, but it does not get the sun. Before I started using the lamp I was getting some mould growth on the plants but it has cleared. There is a little on the top of the plant growng medium in the basket pot but this seems lessened as I use the lamp.
It must be cold at the seaside today. This morning, while making my breakfast, I noticed that next door, where my neighbour puts out lots of food for the birds, there were a flock of around a dozen seagully flying in and out helping themselves. We do get some seagulls around at times but they usually limit themselves to farmland and don't often come in numbers to residential areas.
It's inside, but in this country we expect them to die back in winter.
Just in case, they do like their potassium.
I've seen it said that seaweed feed improves resistance to frost but you are not talking of that here. I have fed my cacti with it before. I wonder if it improves cold resistance too.

I've never heard of that Jen. But it is something i am going to look into.
I don't have banana trees and the ones I have got have lost their leaves for winter, except for the black pine and Bay. One thing I am surprised at though is that at least one of my ferns has still got green leaves. As far as I remember they usually die back every year.

There are thousands of ferns in my woods. They all die back.

I know, That's what I have seen. This is a triplet of those in the garden though. You can see dead fronds but they seem to be thriving now. They originally self seeded so I cannot be certain what they are:
I checked my broad beans in the greenhouse this morning. Here are a couple of different planters with photos taken during the cold snap and how they were today. Broad beans seem pretty hardy and they look to be doing well :

I have been finding more ferns randomly growing in my yard. I'm always happy to find a new one... They are hidden under random places, so it's like playing an object-finding game lol
I've never seen them full-sized like that lol everyone lets them die and throws them away after the holidays.
I keep mine and I think the longest I have had one has been two years. But twenty six years is amazing.
We have one that is several years old. I have cut it back though and repotted it so it isn't very big. It had a bad attack of scale insects last year though and has now only three leaves or so but still appears alive. I have wondered but don't like to kill anything.

I'm the same way even when it comes to my plants. I feel bad if one of them dies.
Hello. Does anyone know how to prevent growing moulds on homegrown garlic? We have harvested and cured our garlic. DH stored them in a cardboard box and placed it under the kitchen cupboard a week ago. I just found out an early signs of moulds. It's quite humid for the past few days and I wonder if that contributes. We are new in growing garlic and it's our first year harvest.
