I better spend a little time with my hydroponics when I get home. I have been a little neglectful lately.
It's getting to the time of year when I have to check for watering daily. With my hydroponic tubs I cannot have automatic top up as there is no supply to the greenhouse (and because of the low budget way I have done things). I checked one yesterday in which the plants are in full growth. The level was down so I need to top up today.
Here are some photos I took a few days ago. The watercress in the hydroponic tank has gone mad. There is a lettuce to the rear as well as some basil, also growning well but cannot really be seen. The other greenhouse photo shows the tomatoes and peppers. These have grown quickly in the past few days and are now very much larger. The outside photo shows a tubs of carrots, beetroot, sage, peas and some endive (which is now past it's best). Everything else is growing well too as it is warm and wet. The ferns, which self seeded from somewhere, will soon dominate lol.

Speaking of ferns.. I love finding random ones growing in the yard lol I have one under the deck and near the AC units. We had one further in the backyard, but some neighbor's yard people chopped it down. They trespassed to do it... and they did it multiple times, as it was trying to regrow. That made me mad! My SO had to tell them that it was our yard and to stay out once we figured out how it was happening because at first we thought maybe it was just animals lol
Our woods have many ferns, but I suspect the brambles are starting to dominate. They grow very fast, and have a very strong rooting technique.
It's sad to see, as I love the ferns, but........
I spent a good part of last Saturday morning chopping back brambles which were growing through the fence at the bottom of the garden. It's effectively waste ground the other side so is not well managed so it is a constant battle with brambles and small trees. One good point is that it is good for wildlife though. There are no ferns there as the brambles have dominated. I have absolutely no idea where our ferns we have in the garden came from. Perhaps one seed blew in years ago and they have been taking over since

Birdfall maybe?
That's the most likely as our neightbour puts out lots and lots for the birds. So much, attracting so many, that I don't have to worry at all about fertiliser for the bottom of the garden
The dreaded Japanese beetles are back. I'm plucking off about 20+ daily (on sunny days, they don't come out much on rainy/cloudy days). They are even having orgies inside of my magnolia flowers
We have bought a bacteria that targets beetles to spray on the foilage of the crape myrtle (their favorite to eat on our property), it is supposed to kill them within a few days of eating it, so we'll see if it helps reduce the numbers. We've already been using milky spores in the soil for the grubs, but if they are coming from somewhere else, then it won't help enough.. maybe this bacteria can be taken with them from wherever they are coming from and spread there instead once they die.
Prior to this we were also using neem to spray, but it's mainly an anti-feedant, and it only lasts for like 1-2 days it seems before the swarms come back. They are landing on pretty much any plants we have that are in the sun, so it's a lot of work... I go out twice a day if I can during the peak hours I tend to see them, and I collect as many as I can and throw them into a bucket of soapy water. It never ends My poor plant has leaves that look skeletal all over because of them.

Biological warfare?
Yes, this is the only time I'm pro-insecticide*.
*bug version of genocide is what I mean by this, not using poisons lol
Luckily we don't have those Japanese beetles here. I have been keeping a close eye on the redcurrents and gooseberries though for the Gosseberry Sawfly. Luckily I haven't seen any yet

I remember those. Nasty little leaf eaters. We don't have them here either.
I have a very young rhodedhendron [or however you spell it ], and the leaf eaters skinned it last year to the point there were shards of green here and there. I am amazed that it has returned to life this year.

I have never seen the leaf eaters though.
I have noticed with trees and bushes before that they are often able to stand one total loss of leaves and survive but the second total loss often kills them. It was like that with my gooseberries and redcurrents. The redcurrents (and I think the goooseberries too) did not produce as much fruit the year after their big infestation though.
The energy company destroyed our backyard... no more privacy trees or plants. Wow... most of it was not even near the powerlines, they just cleared it so they can drive trucks around, but we have a creek that prevents them from even using this part of our yard to get anywhere, so it was honestly pointless. Now we'll have to spend thousands just to regrow some plants... hopefully far enough away from the powerlines that they won't just come back and do this again in 10 years.
I'm really upset.. all I can think about is all the homes for the wildlife that was just destroyed. All the birds I'd watch flying back and forth between the trees... the baby deer that would be hidden in the woods... no more.

That's really horrible.
Luckily the woods behind us have no powerlines, but the woods across the road do. They run through one side of the woods, and every few years, they turn up and chop every tree down. No respect.

Why would they do that when there is no reason to. It sounds like "lets do a quick job and get out of here" Total disregard for the environment.

Yep.. they have rules where there needs to be so much clearance and whatnot all around the powerlines, even if the plants are not technically in the way of anything, and it's worse because there is plenty of room and on the opposite side where they can work on things if needed... ridiculous. We asked for opinions on what we can plant and where... and they said it should be fine if we kept things in line with some of the other plants we planted ourselves over the last few years, and as long as they stay on the smaller side. I hope that is true because it will be even worse if we have to go through this all over again in 10 years or so.

That's really nasty. It sounds like you have the same issues as we have. Certain companies can easily overrule any objection to invasion of your property. They seem able to close roads on a whim as well. Here the railways seem the worst.

Yep, it's both our property and not. We can do what we want with it, but then so can they lol
