I am looking into hydroponics a little (prompted a little by Karen mentioning it ). I have one experimental little home-made pot on the go (wick feed) in which all three seeds that I planted at the end of last week have germinated (Pak Choi), but, yesterday, I downloaded an whole library of books to learn a bit. I am a kleptomaniac for information lol
Jen, it can be so rewarding and fun. I just love doing it and find it exciting to grow something a non traditional way.
Here in the wintry uk, there is a tree outside my holiday apartment laden with tiny red apples, but no leaves.
Does anyone know what it is?
No but I noticed a miniature tree in a garden closeby where I live which has no leaves but still had lots of normal size yellow apples on it when I passed a week or so ago. With my tree, if there are any apples, the blackbirds love them at this time of year and they go. Talk to the gardener / maintenance staff when they come round. I am sure they will have been asked before.

I have to wait to see colors in my garden but I could not be more pleased with the way my front and back yard turn out, especially at night. The only thing left to do is to seal the stamped concrete backyard and driveway.
It's the dormant time of year now but I have lots of seedlings which seem to be surviving in the greenhouse and waiting for warmer wather. My broad beans did survive the recent cold weather.

Its growing season here, Of course you can grow something here all year round.

Stamped concrete?
They pour concreate then they stamp and seal Cherry, it looks like this:

I first heard about it in the early '90s when I temped at a concrete company. They offered Stampcrete at the time. It's amazing what they can do with it...much less labor-intensive than laying pavers.
These ice storms.. not sure if the flowers we planted will make it through it. They are supposed to do okay in cold weather, but not if they get squished by ice that is weighing the cover down onto them still lol ughhh! We don't always get this type of weather, but figures we went 4 years without these type of storms and as soon as we plant flowers we get one.

Isn't that always the way? The rule of thumb here is that we don't plant anything before Mother's Day. Unfortunately, we've had bad weather lately and some wait until after Memorial Day now. I've given up for now. Gardening is now my retirement plan.

Heather, how much ice are you getting?
It was maybe two inches or so of sleet at most. Luckily it was mostly the sleet instead of the freezing rain that sticks to everything.. that's how we lost trees a few years back, they got too top-heavy.

Sleet is bad enough but the freezing rain is the real problem. just like you said we had a massive ice storm of freezing rain when i lived in new Hampshire and we lost power for almost two weeks.
Really looking forward to all the pics of your new place.
Is this the first place you have designed in total?
In total, I built from scratch once before but I did not design anything by myself, I always have at least one architect on the project.
This place is a challenge to me because the house was small when I got it, I did not and have not been able to add anymore squarefootage so it's still at 2200sft. Until all the problems are resolved, I can't do anything. I was so determined to not waste any space like we did with our other houses, so it's difficult and I am still trying to figure out if I can live with 2200 sft at this place or move back to our other place and wait until the final inspection passes, then add more space. I can see two problems already, no room for his exercise equipment and no room for my baby grand piano.

Today I managed to get the apple tree pruned. Another big job done
What type of apples are they? I've been eating honeycrisp lately.
Very indeterminate. My stepson planted a seed from an apple he eat when he was little and it germinated. I put the plant, when it outgrew it's pot, at the bottom of the garden. The apples seem to be a combination between eaters and cookers but, although they don't taste fantastic, they are tasty after the have been stored for a week or two and they keep for months.
