Hubby and I are always trying something different....and we do follow recipes. Oftentimes, I'll find a recipe with a flavor combination I would have never thought to try, so I go by the publisher's vision.

If we like it, I will consider making it again. If I think it's worth changing, I would do that as well. How often I prepare it depends highly on how difficult it is. Case in point: Earlier this week, I made Tomato-Watermelon Gazpacho with Basil & Jalapeño. The bite I took after making it wasn't impressive. I had my doubts about making it ever again, since it took some time to prepare the ingredients (cube the watermelon; seed the tomatoes, cucumbers and jalapeños; peel garlic cloves and shallots; etc.). The recipe called for 1.5 hours of refrigeration, up to overnight. We had it the next evening, and it was wonderful! I guess, it took time for the flavors to meld.

We tend to make large batches on the weekend, doubling or tripling a recipe so that we don't have to spend too much time in the kitchen during the week.

lol I kind of do that... I'll find a recipe online just to put an idea in my head, but I still wing it and make it my own.

Chicken stew:

Heat oil in a pot.
Throw in finely chopped lemon grass, garlic, purple onion and sliced yellow onion
When all becomes soft, add tumeric powder (1/2 teaspoon), curry powder (1 teaspoon) and three tablespoons of ketchup.
Add chicken - cut into one inch cube
Add carrots and potato
Add black pepper, salt and sugar to taste

Eat with baguette.

Apple Brie Sandwich:

- slice sourdough bread
- slice apple thinly
- slice soft/spreadable brie cheese
- slice cured prociusto

place apple on the sourdough, then brie, bake until cheese a little burned, take out, place prociusto on top, ready to serve.

I made a vanilla pudding on Sunday: and even my sister enjoyed it. I write this because my sister doesn't have a sweet tooth and is very sensitive to sugar in her food.

I whisked half a tub of double cream into thick whipped cream. I didn't even need to use an electric whisk. I spooned the cream on top of the vanilla pudding.

I definitely love making desserts. The other week I made an apple crumble. Seriously nice. I shall be baking a cake in the next few weeks, too.

i go on kicks where i make something for weeks on end and currently I'm on this soft flatbread kick that's super simple since I use a tortilla press to flatten the discs instead of rolling them out. i tried a sweetened version the other day and it was pretty good too though I'll probably try adding some whey protein next time and cook it in some oil to give it more structure so hopefully it ends up like fried dough/elephant ears. i just eat them plain or, you guessed it, with butter.

Sometimes, I have recipes for years before I try them. This is one of them. I had to do some research to find out where I got it. Turns out, I got it from a regular newsletter I received from UCHealth in 2018.

The picture is a stock image of beef stew, as the recipe contains no mushrooms or bacon as depicted.

I have made Julia Child's Beef bourguignon before. In fact, I bought my Dutch Oven for that purpose years ago! Since I couldn't find frozen onions or peas, I bought fresh. I didn't use baby carrots because I had plenty of tri-colored carrots already. Here's a picture of what I made.

The wine I used may be considered by some to be too expensive for stew. I used a French burgundy, although other reds will do. As I recall, Julia Child said to cook with whatever wine you like to drink, so there!

in ONE WEEK i start my 10-day carbcation and i've finalized my To Make list. I'm going to make some bolos levedos, giant soft pretzels, homemade pasta for angelini osteria lasagna verde and fresh angel hair carbonara, milk bar pie (formally known as crack pie), milk bar popcorn cake, malted milk ball cookies, from scratch overnight neapolitan pizza and detroit style pizza, and an oatmeal i ate as a kid i haven't had in decades that's made with milk, brown sugar, raisins, chopped dates, butter, and mini marshmallows.

I made a lemon sponge cake today. I used a Betty Crocker pack.

These are the simple steps I followed

1. Sifted all the flour into a glass bowl
2. Measured out 180ml of milk
3. Beat into the milk 3 eggs
4. Measured out 90ml of vegetable oil
5. Mixed the oil into the milk and egg mixture
6. Slowly poured the liquid into the sifted flour
7. Whisked well
8. Greased a cake tin with butter and flour
9. Poured the cake mixture into the tin
10. Cooked in the oven at gas mark 4/180c for 50 minutes

A perfect cake!

Well its almost December... Today Im making a simple cranberry jelly to be enjoyed with meals during the next few weeks..
Tomorrow the first batch of mince pies. Home made mincemeat and pastry made with real butter , topped with flaked almonds and just a light dust of icing sugar to finish..

I gave up on trying to bake cakes with whole wheat because they were dense or dry (or both), though I should just keep trying to find good recipes. Let me know, ladies, if you see any that claim to be as light as white wheat. Might as well try!

In the meantime, the middle guy has asked for pie for his birthday this week, rather than cake. We'll save the birthday cake for Jesus, a tradition I started a couple years ago for Christmas at our house. (We had always done pie, but then the meal was just Thanksgiving 2.0, so we wanted to change things up and I wanted tons of reminders of the religious reason for the holiday.)

And no, I don't make my own pie crusts either. I'll probably just buy one already made. *Blush*

I'm thinking of making some version of latkes today.. I was reading about how original latkes used to actually be made with cheese instead of potatoes. I had no idea, and I love cheese! So.. I have some cornbread mix I was going to use to make cornbread, but now I'm thinking of taking some of that as my binder and making some type of cornbread cheese latkes... It will be a side with some ribs, baked beans, and coleslaw.

I'm also making the coleslaw myself, never really did it before.. I just know I don't like the super runny ones or the overly mayo'd kinds.. so I'll have to find a good balance.
