When I got my iPhone last year, they sent an Apple tech to my house to transfer all the data from my old to my new phone. Even show me the features and how to use them. I must admit, I only care about text, call, take pics and listening to music.
Until 2017, I've always had a "dumb" flip phone. When I bought my car in 2017, I got a Samsung Galaxy S7 which barely fit in the car's Qi charger. Since then, phones have gotten larger and larger, to the point where they're considered "phablets." When Apple came out with the iPhone 12 mini last year, I bought one. So far, I'm NOT impressed! After the iOS 15 upgrade, I've had nothing but problems. Today, I found out that a good number of my contacts vanished into thin air...they're not in the cloud, either. GRRRRR!
I've spent a good portion of this evening trying to recover/recreate my contacts. Some will be lost for a little longer, since I didn't have them in Outlook on my laptop or in my landline handset's directory. (I have other means of recovering them.) It's a good thing that I've not allowed my phone to be the single point of failure in my life...as I can't rely on Apple's cloud.
I always write them all out before I change phones.

Thats probably a good idea. If you do it, nothing will go wrong.

There's hardly anyone I'd even miss if their # vanished.. most people I do speak to I can just contact via FB or email to ask for it again otherwise lol

I love my smart phone: I have it on me constantly. HOWEVER, I do not like it when you're in company with someone and they're on their phone. It is rude and unacceptable. If the person is bored, I'd rather them say so and end the afternoon than have them play with their smart phone. There is a time and a place: the afternoon with me is NOT that time and place.
My phone is on all the time, so are my companies. We all have children live in different states, business to run, we understand life sometime is unavoidable so we don't mind. We never whip out the phone voluntarily and make call or just look up whatever.

You're right to only keep your phone on in company when you actually NEED to. Because it is just so rude to play with one's mobile phone when you're with your friends. In fact, my sister did this and I really wanted to tell her to turn off her phone: I was getting very annoyed. Also, the white cat doesn't like me on my phone either: she'll stare at me and the phone, jealous of this red box. The white cat does NOT like being ignored. Elizabeth definitely is hard work but worth more than the phone. I'd certainly choose a loving animal over a YouTube video.
Waiting until the end of the month for a new one... a new-new one. My SO talked me into just spending the little extra to get the newest one because last years didn't really drop in price much anyway.

I had planned to switch to a newer model of flip phone that would have some Google apps for GPS and speech-to-text. The phone I chose is marketed that way, but when you get it, the first update removes those apps and that functionality! So uncool! I had hoped to save money using that phone and going to a cheaper cell plan with very little data included...
I'm saving the flip phone as a souvenir for the kids, or perhaps a backup if we need a cell for them so they can call home?
In the meantime, I removed several apps from my smartphone to stop me from obsessively checking it. I've just switched cell providers and didn't like the options for new phones, but found the plan I wanted was only for bringing your own phone, anyway. I think that I'll check online for refurbished phones every so often, always newer models than my current phone. When the price comes within reason, I can buy without (likely) being charged more from a cell company and will also keep the plan I like!

err - it sounds like too much complication for me. All I want, and need, is a phone to make calls with occasional text.

That sounds like me. I hate spending too much time on my phone.
All switched over to my new phone.. it's definitely a world of a difference. I still won't use it much, but when I do have to use it, at least it won't be so slow.

I'm waiting for my number to be switched from the old company to the new one, then I can put the new SIM card in my phone. I think just before a long weekend was the wrong time for such a task as I haven't received the confirmation text I'm supposed to get from the old company, and I still have service with them. May check on it tomorrow, or just wait till Tuesday. Either way, it'll get switched by next weekend!
I am thinking on upgrading my iPhone since it's stopped receiving the latest update. I'll still hold to it until December or January then give it to my kid who is more than happy to get it as the first phone. It'll be used mainly for text and call. We only need to buy a phone case to protect it. I hope its battery and apps functionality would last for another two years before my husband and I buy this kiddo a new phone (a milestone!).

I have an iPhone 13 but I am not obsessed with phone, it's just a phone.
We're the same, alsr: it IS just a phone. Sure, I like its features and its uses, but I am not obsessed with it and don't use it in company. It is very rude to play with your phone when you're with other people. I HATE it when people do that to me, so avoid doing the same myself. If you're with me, you're with me. If you're on your phone, I will leave you to it.
