I left my previous employer before they started issuing smartphones so have only ever carried the old simple ones, although years ago when we only had one for emergency callouts it was more like the 'brick' they talk about.
Ive been getting my daughters old work phones for number of years now. But the newest one theyve given has encrypted stuff on it and she says they have to be handed back this time in exchange for the newer one.
She now refuses to carry or answer her work phone out of working hours though. Its a back door way of getting people to work more for free.

I have a smart phone, but it's a tool for me, and that's all.
I need a decent clear phone as I have a scottish accent, and the locals don't always understand me.

I have two phones actually. My work one I never answer. I wait for them to leave me a message. It cuts down on the speculative new patients.
If they want me, they can start on the answerphone.

Unless i know the number or it's one of my contacts I never answer it and let it go to voicemail.

I still have a landline. Since I got my first cell phone, I never gave out the number to people outside my family. That included prospective employers. Only until recently have I started bringing it into the house. Normally, I keep it in the car. The way that I look at it is: I pay for phone and service for my convenience, not anyone else's. If they want to reach me 24/7, then they can pay for it, and I'll carry their phone around and use it for only their purposes. I don't want to be on an electronic leash.

Before we got cell phones at work there was the general acceptance of employees using their landline phones for work purposes. It was a sticking point with me which the management were not happy with as I said I was not going to use the landline phone for work purposes unless they contributed to the bill. They never did. When we started using mobiles it did not take them long to clarify use of the mobile for home calls and allocate the costs accordingly. My work phone was always off outside working hours unless I was on-call.
That would be the way I would prefer it although the landline is useful occasionally. The main reason for the line's existance is for the Internet connection.
I have a landline because it was free with my tv and internet package but I dont use it.
My mobile is unlimited calling within my own country 2 hours free calling to any EU country, enough internet for me for a month ( mostly I check things like the rain radar or I look up things for the old people when Im there) , and it only costs me €12.50 per month which I find resonable enough. I skype with mum so the 2 hours is for calling my son or my sister in law ..

It goes to show how technology has advanced the world. The 21st century IS full of wonderful gadgets and computer and computer programmes. You just cannot get bored with technology.
We do all haggle over prices every time our contract runs out?
Haggle, jump ship, do whatever I have to to keep my cost down.
LOL good for you.
I just thought I would mention that all the providers afaik, have a department for it. All you have to do is ask for the department that try and talk you out of leaving when your contract ends.
There tends to be very little waiting for that call to be taken up lol, and they are quick to offer you a better deal.

Nope, I don't play that game. That's why I no longer have Sirius XM. They couldn't continue with my reasonable rate, so I dropped them...no skin off my nose. Now, they send me snail mail wanting me back and offering me the deal I requested from the beginning...ain't gonna happen.

I tend to hate the hassle too and often just jump elsewhere without discussion. I must admit though that I got a significant reduction on my car insurance from the same company by going online and accessing them via one of these price comparison sites. From previous experience I don't think I would have got the same deal contacting the company direct. I am thinking that, with cookies, IP adresses etc, these companies know who you are as soon as you access their sites. I think, even if it generally is not quite that, with the Internet company you have your contract with, they can monitor your searches elsewhere. Whether this is legal? or if they do?

The only time I have it is when they give me that $5 a month special for a year. other than that it is cancelled.

That's why I delete my browsing data when I exit...so that companies can't serve me ads based on my searches, or subject me to dynamic pricing based on the number of times I viewed a product.

So do I but I think that some of these companies have a data store at their end which is a compilation of facts about us. I see when I look on social media these days a very wierd collection of recommended things. How that came about I really don't know as I barely glance at many of them.

I still use snailmail: I do send greeting cards via Moonpig.com, however. I write letters and cards on paper and use a lot of stickers to make them pop. I LOVE writing letters and cards. Receiving a card through the post is old fashioned yet wonderful and magical.

I don't think that would work for me because I get recommendations based on things I say out loud LOL and I do not have one of those things you talk to... Siri and whatever else!
