I've cleared out my fridge of old foods: they went in the bin and outside.
I now only have in-date food in my fridge.
If food passes the sniff test, I will eat it. Raw chicken and fresh eggs are the only exception. I got Campylobacter from chicken once.
It's interesting how some things last these days. I realised this morning that the brown bread that I used some of for toast yesterday, and was still Ok and softish, I did not actually buy last Sunday but the previous Sunday so is probably a week after it's best by date. I imagine that as it's a bit cool and the heating is a bit lower because it's now spring and I turned it down when it warmed up, it's keeping better.
I am careful with chicken but eggs - not so much. I tend to overcook them though.

You only want Campylobacter once, after that you get really careful. On the plus side, I got over it in two weeks, but my GP refused to sign me on for a further 4 weeks, until I produced a clear sample.

I don't really want to get it once but some of the really nasty things do seem to be more a problem with production rather than reasonable shelf life. It doesn't seem quite so bad now that much food is traceable to origin but a few years back they were processing pretty old meat and things.

I've done a full clean today. This includes my bathroom and kitchen. I have also wiped down surfaces with anti-bacterial wipes and am running two fans. I also took out the rubbish & recycling. I keep on top of the laundry, too.

I plan to defrost the freezer today. It's not a complicated job, with the gentle assistance of a hair dryer. The way the ice has built up though I think I forgot last year. It onlyneeds doing once a year.

Is that better than the pans of boiling water I place on the shelves?

Defrost the freezer? Is this the freezer in your refrigerator or a stand alone freezer?

My maid service has been cleaning my freezer and refrigerator all these years so I don't have to deal with this.

As it happened I hardly used the hair dryer as the ice peeled off, using my fingers, faiirly well and it only took about half an hour. It was well frozen and I got a sink full of ice out of it. I do wonder if, the last time I did it, I wiped the surface of the sides with something to reduce the stickiness of the ice but it was so long ago that I don't remember (maybe silicone?). I don't like to stress the freezer with rapid temperature variation but maybe pans of boiling water would be useful as the door could be closed during defrosting. With our simpler little freezer the open door is an issue as it takes longer to defrost.

It's one of those long floor standing types with seperate units (and doors) for the refrigerator and freezer. There is one mains plug and so I am effectively defrosting both but the fridge bit does not get frosted up so does not need defrosting. I got one that did not have automatic defros as they tend to be more economic and our last one, which was self defrosting, was terrible and actually did need defrosting to the extent of having to open up a rear panel to properly get at it.

It just takes me by surprise because I have never had to defrost the freezer that is part of my refrigerator. I even have a second refrigerator / freezer in the garage where it is hoit, and humid, especially in the summer and I haven't even had to do that one. There has never been an ice buildup.

If yours are self defrosting then, in theory, you shouldn't need to. If the door is open for a very small amount of time too then little humid air will get in but if any amount does then I would think there would have to be ice somewhere. If they are not self defrosing then maybe there is some other aspect of their design?
