I always thought that the COO at my work place was neat and tidy because he always acted like it. His office was very uncluttered and well organized. Then, last week, we had an offsite meeting and I got a ride in his car, an Audi R8. All nice and shiny from the outside but when I got inside the car, it was a mini dumpster. OMG, I was shocked! He could not tidy up his car fast enough. I am telling you, my car can be dusty from the outside, but it's always clean and neat on the inside. That really changed my perception about him. If he could clean the outside, why didn't he clean the inside too?
There was someone who worked in our department, at work, who had constant use of a particular pool car. In the office he was reasonably tidy. When he was on holiday, one time, I asked to use the car. When I opened the door I was almost sick on the spot. It was foul, stank of rotting food and was visually like a dump. I quickly shut the door and refused to use it.
It's interesting how people are though. I remember when my stepson lived at home he was very untidy and I often had to walk over piles of clothing in his room to get to open the window. Now he has his own place, with his partner, their house is spotless.

Not terribly pertinent, but in Scotland we call cows coos.
That will help when you all visit Scotland, and want to come across as local.

My step daughter was generally neat and tidy, but every so often, her room was like that too.

I can tell his car wasn't vacuumed for a very long time and the trash in the car has been there for a while already.

I have a friend whose house is really mucky, cluttered, and untidy. I was amazed one day when she had hoovered the front hall. There was actually and AA battery at the foot of the stairs, and you could see by the fluff, and grime, that she had actually hoovered around it.

I am forever cleaning: I hate dirt and mess. I schedule time every single week to do a thorough clean of my apartment. It means I am busy doing something and I am proud of that.
My sister can be a tad messy but she isn't out-of-control and can control her clutter. Her car isn't messy, either. My sister doesn't clean perfectly but she doesn't hoard or be unhygienic either.

Well, as is usual, I cleaned my bathroom and kitchen today. I also took out the rubbish & recycling and am airing out my apartment.
Again, I have to be vigilant about cleaning: if I let it slide my apartment looks an utter mess. You really need to keep on top of a small space. It takes constant work. BUT it is well worth it!

We're on track today, but I'm not sure how the week will finish - we've got appts that might make it harder to get it all done. We'll have to see how to work around them so there's not a lot of cleaning on the weekend, when we want to be relaxing!

I saw a lovely little story years ago, that I have always remembered.
Scene: Two grandchildren are playing in the house making a right old mess as they go along. Gran is watching, and joining in. The mother returns.
The mother is disappointed at the mess: "Look at the mess you two kids have made! Remember: Cleanliness is next to......"
Gran interrupts: "... loneliness, my dear. Cleanliness is next to loneliness."

Poor woman..
I think there is a balance. It is great to be clean & tidy but not if you're unhappy being that way. However, living in muck and filth is going too far, too. If you're surrounded by piles of clothes and rubbish, something is not right. But if you are so rigid your home is high pressured and looks like a magazine you've got it wrong, too.
There IS more to life than cleaning. However, hygiene and being fairly tidy is important.
