Thank you all . Ive been onto the council who are arranging the funeral. They have given my contact details to the funeral home.
Of course it will be simple because he had no money or insurence but they say we will still be able to say goodbye and maybe have some say in music or a prayer ( I dont think he was religious)
Offically as I am not family I am not allowed into his home ( I cant get in anyway ) the lady at the council says she will try to arrange for me to have his photos but she cant promise... They throw all that stuff in a skip anyway why not just let me have them?
Im being nice and co-operating as much as possible in the hope that they will give me them as a kindness. But I cant help wishing we had just forced the door collected his personal things and then called the police.

It'll be good to have a thoughtful and nostalgic send-off. Even though he wasn't religious, he still had people who cared. You can't get closure from a funeral but you can say goodbye with good memories.
This afternoon I have spent a sad hour standing in a garden while the police gained entry to my friend's house. I have been unable to reach him and today when I could not gain entry to his house and he did not answer when I called through the letterbox I had to call the police, they broke in and sadly found he had passed away at some point during the weekend.
As I am not family I have no right to decide anything but I am the official informant and so the police have said as soon as they establish that his death was natural causes I will be allowed to retrieve some of his personal belongings which I can then return to his family in France.
I wish he had accepted help maybe passed away in a comfortable hospital bed but this was what he wanted, to be left alone and die at home. Stubborn right to the last..
How terrible, I am so sorry Cassie, I am glad he got you who really cared. How are they going to inform his relatives now? Do you know them or you are waiting for them to come to you?
Thank you all for your kind words. One family adress has been found and two telephone numbers although at the moment there has been no contact with family.
The lady from the council was kind enough to drop a couple of photos off to me yesterday sadly she could not find the one of him with the bobsled team that I know was so dear to him. But at least I have a couple of photos to include in a card of condolance for his family. The cremation will be next week and Ive spoken to the funeral directors there will be a short ceramony and they will call me on Monday to get more details for the eulogy and of course Ive asked them to play the La Marseillaise ( French national anthem) that seems fitting for a man who served his country in both war and peace times and who was stubbornly French to the end.
If I can ( all non essential shops are shut) I will try to arrange some sort of floral tribute as well.

I have prepared a draft for a new book. I have also had my daily shower and drunk my caffetterie coffee. I've put on a load of laundry and am airing out my apartment, too.

It is odd to look at the importance of neighbourliness, and then to contrast it to it's right in law.
Condolences, and respect to you, Cassie. You have been a good friend to him.

I have published my new book with Lulu.com called "Miscellaneous 2022". I really worked hard at editing it. The process is as important as the final product. [To quote Grimes: whom I admire].
I have also given my apartment a clean: the usual cleaning my bathroom and kitchen, etc.
The oh has gone to work. I am of to the sales, see if I can find a nice birthday present for her. August comes around so quickly......
I will also be looking for presents for my kids. I have already picked up a snoopy tote bag, and pair of snoopy slippers for her birthday, also August.

I had my daily shower today, as normal. I also ended up having a two-hour nap. I gave myself a manicure, using a summer pink colour in the morning. I have been browsing the Internet, too.
