Today was spent going down one "technological" rabbit hole after another...
After Mom was discharged from hospice (again), a different (local) company took over her care. Well, they use a patient portal (AthenaHealth), as I received an email from them after their first visit with her. This email had a link to the notes posted on the portal, but she didn't have an account.
My doc uses the same portal for his practice as well, so I already have an account with them. So, I logged into my account and tried to set up "family access." I entered all her information, but "there was no record" of her. The top of the web page indicated that this was for my doc's practice.
So after calling the provider yesterday, I was told that would have to create a separate account for her, using a separate email...
Mom is a soon-to-be 85 year-old woman who has dementia and was otherwise computer illiterate and has never had her own email account. Dad was the one who always received emails for her. After some googling and trying to create an account for her under mine. I tried calling customer (dis)service. After going round and round with their telephone system which tells me, every time to go to their web site, and trying to get a representative to help, I ended up throwing the handset down the hallway. I know, mistreating technology doesn't make it work any better. I've thrown something out of sheer anger and frustration only one other time in my life.
I had to create a freemail account for her in order to set her up with a Comcast ID. Once that was done, I had to activate the email account. I then tried to set up my Outlook client to grab her emails as well as my own. That didn't work, either. I ended up using the forwarding function so that her Comcast email would be forwarded to mine. GRRRR! Okay...that tested out pretty well.
So, it's all set up to create her own patient portal account...
I created a new AthenaHealth account using her new email address. I saw that there was nothing but an "empty" account. I went into the "Family Access" area and granted myself full access. I then signed into my own account, where I was met by my mother's name and provider. My account information vanished! Under Mom's name, there were two links for her and one for me (self). I clicked on my name, and my provider's name was gone as well as my history. GRRRRR!!!!!
I went back to the original email that the provider sent, referring to visit notes, and I clicked the link. It took me to the account THEY created for her, using MY email account, which I cannot change in her profile. I downloaded the notes, because when I call to complain on Monday, I don't want those to disappear as well.
Technology...it's not for sissies.
The rest? Not so much.
There is very little that can make steam come out my ears, but computers are certainly capable of it. Phones are even worse, coz the rabbit holes you go down are even smaller.
More than once I have had to tell myself "This phone cost a lot of money. Smashing it against the wall will not fix it."
For you it is worse. You are trying to look after a loved one, who struggles to look after herself.
