A terrible tragedy outside my daughters house yesterday.
The neighbours had a cat. It sat in my daughters front yard all the time and people thought it was hers so much so that when it rained they knocked at her door concerned for the cat..She kept re-directing them but the neighbours took no notice. Its a busy road opposite the hospital and on a bus route so my daughter kept saying she was worried that the cat would get hit by a vehicle sooner or later. But the neighbours did nothing.
Yesterday a man walking his newly adopted dog on a short lead. As they passed my daughters house the cat was sitting by the gate post the man didnt see it but the dog did and pounced. The cat died of its injuries. My son inlaw ran out and threw water on the dog so it let go of the cat but it was too late.
The neighbours are now weeping and wailing blaming the dog owner.. The dog owner has been very good he stayed around has said he will muzzle his dog from now on and offered to pay cremation costs for the cat. He didnt have to, his dog was on a short lead and was walking on the path so he wasnt breaking any rules.
My daughter and SIL have told the neighbour to shut up and accept that this was their own fault for not listening and allowing such a young and friendly cat to wander the streets day and night.
My daughter has 4 cats of her own and she is very upset by whats happened. My SIL is still not over seeing the young man who killed himself in front of the train a few weeks ago and I think this is only going to add to his stress. Why are some owners so stupid and uncaring about what happens to their pets?

RIP kitty.
When I saw terrible tragedy and cat I almost didn't read it. I am one of the biggest cat lovers in the world and I am just heartbroken at this. The poor little kitty.
The people with the dog are seriusly considering if they are the right people for this dog Something I was afraid might happen , people just cannot cope with the idea that cuddely fido has prey drive.
But the cat people , the father of the familiy has put his foot down. He took all the cat bed, litter box ,food etc to the local rescue center and donated it he has told the children and his wife NO more cats.. Thats it , the previous cat was hit by a car, and now this he says enough is enough.. Good man at least someone has learned something.
I absolutely love this so much. Everything is so true. I watched it twice and what is funny in my Nellie watched it with me. The best part was the toe under the covers. I put up with that every night. Thank you so much, I am going to share this with all my fiends.
Its Georges birthday. We adopted him when he was 18 months old and I cant believe hes four today.
The time has flown by and Im astounded that apart from commands that involve a treat reward like collecting the post he has learned or rather has decided he wont learn anything useful like not pulling like a train or not barking at everything he sees go past the car on an outing.. Trying to drive with a beagle blasting your eardrums is distracting. And the farts...OMG the farts, they are real chemical warfare..They make your eyes water and your stomach churn.
But he is cute, he loves cuddles, he is Murphys best buddy , he is a sweet natured and friendly dog and we love him.
Regarding pets and fireworks.. You know how people are saying that women should not have to change their behaviour or clothing or hide indoors after dark or guard their drinks or avoid nighclubs because of the risk of sexual assault and that in asking them to do so is victim blaming? Well how about this. Each year pet owners are told , only walk your dogs in daylight ( do they know how early it gets dark?) we are told to buy calming drops (ie drugs) to keep our pets calm, to dress them in tight jumpers to soothe them, keep all our doors and windows closed, play loud music or shut them in a room with classical music playing and all because some people want to roam the streets between now and mid January letting off fireworks . ie; mini bombs..
So..Is my dog being provocative by wanting to pee after dark? Is he to blame for wanting to walk in the park instead of on a brightly lit street or main road? Is he 'asking' to be terrorized? Is his fear not valid? Is he to blame for having sensitive ears? So why the victim blaming? Why insist that pet owners make changes to their lives. Why blame the pets for being scared when criminals ( because thats what they are) break the law and let off fireworks at times and in places that they are not allowed... Heres an idea, instead of blaming the pets blame the criminals, the underage kids throwing fireworks, the idiot parent buying them for the kids and the shop keepers who sell them to underage kids or under the counter when they shouldnt. Why? because its easier to blame the victims and continue to collect the revenue that firework sales generate.
Then there is as always my own personal choice of action. Anyone coming at my dogs with fireworks will be punished; I will take their fireworks shove them where the sun doesnt shine and light them... No warnings no sympathy...

I won't argue with any of that.
My real gripe is over setting them off outside of the celebratory events. Bonfire night is not named bonfire fortnight for a reason.
cherry exactly.. Fireworks here are sold only on the three days up to and including New years Eve. They are allowed to be set off between 10am on dec31 until 2am on jan 1st..
Rockets and big explosive ones have been banned for 2 years. So why have my windows regularly rattled with the force of explosions since September?

Our dog passed away yesterday... She made it to 20 and a half years old.
She started to decline on Sunday night. They placed her in an oxygen chamber and gave her more diuretics to try to get fluid out of her lungs, but nothing was really helping enough, and her oxygen never got above 80%. We had to make the decision to let her go so she wouldn't have to suffer anymore. It's always so hard to do even if it's the "right" thing to do..
We buried her last night. My SO's mom has a pet cemetery of sorts in their yard, and she's next to her parents and her daughter (the one we lost about a year before).
I know losing pets is hard.. but if I had the choice to do it all over again even knowing how much it will hurt at the end, I'd do it in a heartbeat just to be with them again

To get to over 20, she had to be happy and content.

So sorry for the loss of your loved one. To get to 20 proves she was loved and cherished...

I'm sorry to hear Heather. My thoughts are with you.
What a week. Last Saturday I was out walking my dogs when my daughter phoned...Mum Stewie is dying we need the vet now!
I turned the car round and got home ASAP. Off we went to the vet and they did tests said he had a heart murmer on the right and that he had retained fluid so they wanted to do an echo but the echo tech wasnt there, so they gave her some pills until Monday and then come back... The tech did the echo on Monday after shaving the cat with a lawn mower.. We it was so uneven and choppy it might well have been a lawn mower. They said there was definate heart problems and she should see a cat cardiologist because they dont do cardio problems then they held out their hand for €285. The nearest cardio vet to us is an hours drive we had to find that out ourselves.
My daughter thought about it and how unclear they were and then decided to phoned my vet... Told them what had happened and asked about a second opinion. They said she could come in.. So we went to my vet. Two of them examined the cat seperately then went to compare notes. They have said the heart is weaker and there are sounds of reguritation on both sides not just the right, there is also fluid retention . The vet said 'its up to you if you have deep pockets or you need to hear it from a specialist thats fine but personally if it were my cat...I wouldnt bother putting him through it because at the end of the day they wont be able to do anything'.
So they gave her medication to get rid of the fluid and steriods to help the heart. She is to keep giving that until after the weekend ( the vet said you dont want to risk reducing anything on a Friday meaning you have to pay for an emergancy vet) but as from Monday she has to reduce the fluid tablets by 1 quarter every 3 days and see how he gets on. If she notices him getting breathless shes has reduced too much. Let them know at the end of the week how he is doing..
Once she finds the right level to maintain his body she can stay at that for now. They have said they are on hand for telephone consults no charge. If she needs more medication she doesnt need to pay a consult fee just phone and they will make the meds ready for her but if at any time shes worried she can bring the cat in. cost €92-
My daughter says its not just about the cost its about the way they made her feel.. As if they were working with her, including her and understood how she felt. They looked at this from a personal point of view and advised as if it were their own cat...
Pleasant customer service counts for a lot, and is usually a low expenditure process. Some professionals really don't get that. They think that their qualification is all that is needed. I had a few like that in my departments. They never got past first base on the promotion ladder.
