I got around to planting some seeds for winter veg a couple of days back. I hope it isn't too late for them to get a sprint on before it gets too cold.
It has felt like autumn for a good few days now.
Yes I know. My seeds are in the house in a propagator. Some have already sprouted so hopefully won't take long to grow a little. The veg will be in the greenhouse so should get the benefit of a couple of months of reasonable weather before it gets very cold..

Have you had much fewer lawn mowing to do this year?
I don't count it, but it seems well down from previous years.

Lucky, this time of year we could mow the lawn twice a week but we still try to have it done only once.

Now you mention it, I have hardly mown the lawn at all.
All my seeds have germinated now and things are moving to little leaves
My little plants are growing really quickly so I may plant them out in the greenhouse later in the week
You get a lot from your gardening.
I ate my brambles last night alone. They are definitely lacking without apple.
My daughter in law gave us a few cooking apples on Sunday. Yesterday I went out and picked another lunch box full of blackberries, so a crumble is planned.
I think the blackberry season has past it's peak here now though, even though there will be plenty yet. The insect numbers are increasing and many of the blackberries are looking rather ropey.

A couple of days ago I planted out my winter veg seedlings in planters in the greenhouse. They seem to be coming on well. I will have to keep a good eye out for slugs though as they like veg too
On Wednesday evening I ordered some more Sundew plants. I'm loving them at the moment with their sticky leaves keeping the little flies down and their beautiful, simple tiny flowers. It's a bit late in the season to order new ones as they may soon go into winter dormancy but I won't have many plants around until late January or February now so it's a good time to organise.
From the seeds I planted, which were like dust, I now see there are little plants growing. There are also spagnum moss plants beginning to grow too so the Sundews were difficult to spot. I needed a magnifiying glass as they are only around a milimetre in size. I wonder if they will survive and wonder even more how they cope in the wild.
My Venus Flytraps are a bit slow to sort themselves. Two of those I repotted have grown well, one in the house and one in the greenhouse. Of the other two, one seems to have stopped, with just one leaf, and the other keeps putting up a shoot then it dies off again. Fungus gnats I think. We'll see

I got a reasonably good photo of them. You can see the Sundew as they have their little blobs on the leaves. The particles are grains of sand so it does show the scale to some extent:

Well, if someone had said that I would be still picking cucumbers out in the greenhouse at the end of September I this spring I would have thought not. I picked one very nice one today as well as another smaller one. Surely there can be few more?

Jen, you are having an amazing cucumber growing season.

Yes. I have been growing them hydroponically this year for the first time. I must admit that I am getting a little fed up of them though
