You make me worry a bit there as we use Roundup once a year or so to clear the drive. Luckily though there is little to attract the bees. The back garden is the place. It's usually a hive of activity with wildlife. Except for a minor amount of fertilizer everything is natural there as I don't believe in chemicals and like the garden to look as wild as practical.
Have you ever fed bumble bees by hand with a teaspoon when they have landed and are obviously fatigued? I didn't think much of it until I came across one that looked like it was dying. It perked up after feeding with sweet water then took off on it's travels. A nice feeling moment

Hopefully the bees don't wander out there on the days it is sprayed! It seems bees just don't do well with much of anything that humans like to use. I wouldn't know of a good alternative. I just let things be natural and pluck anything that grows where I don't want it to.... I actually kind of like tiny plants growing in the driveway cracks lol it amazes me where things will grow when there's barely any room.
I've helped a bee once! I used a bottle cap. Unfortunately, any others I find are usually already dead before I can help :*( I think some of the mosquito sprays my neighbors use also kills bees.

Yes, if it's pretty we leave it alone.
I like to leave the wild flowers that grow on the drive but, rather than concrete or paved, the drive is the original loose stone / pebbles so lots of weeds grow. The stone is far better for drainage and comes into its own in the winter as, in freezing weather, it's never slippery so we have no intention of changing it. It gets to be a problem with weeds if they are not kept in order.
Weeds are an issue here. We don't have a winter freeze to kill them. In winter they still grow but a little slower.
It's getting more that way here too. We have a cooler climate but the weeds that do grow have adapted and there are far fewer hard frosts than there used to be. I think the bigger issue may be pests though as they are less likely to be reduced by the cold.

Insects, pest, live in Florida. Some of them will freak you out...
I hope this is not true because this tends to decrease the formation of hurricanes, or it at least is suppose to. Last yer was a recoed year and the dust cloud lasted longer and was heavier that it has been in a long time.

I have no doubt! Although a bit big to be an insect, the alligator in the swimming pool is well known and, although I don't mind spiders, some of yours would make me think twice. I suspect we don't know the half of it.

Jen, speaking of alligators I do have them in my backyard too. And don't forget the snakes. Its something you get used to and I am actually making it sound worse than it really is. I'm down by the water and in the woods all the time.

I don't mind snakes or spiders. BUT I do mind other creepy-crawlies. Some bugs completely freak me out. It's strange, though: I have zero fear of spiders. I am able to handle them with confidence. But hand me a different bug and I'm running out the door, screaming.
I have also handled snakes. I rather like snakes, actually. They are interesting animals. I do like the natural world and am fascinated by the rainforests throughout the globe. I also want to visit Africa: it is beautiful there and I will someday go. Africa is a continent of interest and colour and is another world. I do often imagine a tarantula wandering across the lands of Africa, searching for a home as it explores underneath the hot sun.
As for Florida: I will go there one-day, too. America is a country worth the hype.
I don't mind snakes but treat them with respect. Where I live grass snakes are fairly common although most people will not notice them as they keep out of the way. They are very quiet as they move around so you won't hear one as it moves for cover. I know there will be adders too, which are our only poisonous snake. They are very secretive so few have seen them. They are also a lot smaller than grass snakes, but a bite, although apparently very painful, is not usually fatal. The most dangerous snakes here are probably escaped pythons and other consrictors. They are capable of nasty bites and can potentially kill.
I find bugs Ok but am wary of some of them. I got a pinch from an earwig when I was little as it was crawling across my brother's sheets when he was in his pram. Not dangerous at all but I remember it well and it puts me off anything with pincers. Interestingly, where I grew up our neighbour had honey bee hives close to our adjoining fence. There were always bees about but I was never stung by one until many years later elsewhere when I accidently put my hand on a resting bee. It was interesting when I was little, one day. I was playing at a friend's, outside and noticed there were a lot of bees about. Her mother soon came out and brought us in. They were swarming lol, but we were both Ok. Wasps are a different thing though. I was with the same friend, at another time, and we accidently stumbed onto a wasps nest. We both got stung multiple times. We were both Ok but did run crying home and had to spend a while extracting many stings.

That must've been incredibly painful, jen. I was never stung by bees or wasps but I did fall into a nettle ditch as a young child. I can't remember it, but it did happen. I also got hives once as a kid. Now, I DO remember that. I had been rolling around on the grass with my brother. The pollen from the grass got into my skin. HORRIBLE.
Anyhow, it IS best to be respectful of snakes and other animals. Animals can be dangerous. Caution is best.
