Drug statistics indicate that there have been about 100,000 overdose deaths in the USA due to China's export of cocaine laced with fentanyl and all since the border was opened to the Mexican drug cartels.
Yes, I think the $214 million might be spent more wisely. I'm wondering how many jumpers were addicts.
Interesting that you looked at the drug of choice for the white middle classes.
For quite some years the Golden Gate Bridge is being fitted with a steel net to save suicide jumpers. Apparently this scenic bridge is a romantic draw for suicidal jumpers. On average 23 people die there every year.
The original cost was estimated at $48 million. Today they've spent $214 million and more will be needed to complete the net.
Now, I'm sure some "spare of the moment" jumpers may be saved. But some who are turned away, may just find another location. So it would seem the net won't end all 23 annual deaths.
Safety is a concern of course as is humanity. But over $214 million to save at most 23 people a year? Gotta wonder.
What figure would you find acceptable to save such lives as these?
Sorry to wade in on this at a bit of a tangent but ..I think most people here know my background on this subject.
Stop thinking of costs.. Take another look at whats going on here. Every 30 seconds someone somewhere decides they cannot bear the burden of life anymore. Suicide is the biggest killer of young men under 40. Every year in the USA more people kill themselves than are killed by gun crime, but with each gun spree there is worldwide outrage, each year more than 10 times the amount of people who died in 9/11 decide the world is too awful for them to stay in and take their own life, but each year there is re-newed grief and outrage at the events of 9/11...
In answer to the problem of people jumping from a bridge because society has made living to difficult people moan about the price of a net, a net put there to stop the inconvience of having to fish bodies from the river or having them fall onto boats..
How dare their suffering inconvience anyone.
Look at the bigger picture its not about a net or the money its about the fact that we as a society dont really care that people are killing themselves just that they are doing in in a place and a fashion that causes us ( society ) an inconvience...
If thats all those people and their suffering are , an inconvience then maybe they are not the problem maybe the society that pushed them to that deed are.
Time to take a look in the mirror....Because the problem isnt them, its us.

Talking about cocaine: sure, back in the 1980's all the rock stars took it. Yet it is illegal. That rockstar could snort cocaine like drinking coca-cola and get away with it: at least where the law is concerned.
However, if I were caught with cocaine in my apartment, I'd be arrested and put in prison for 10 years. That is why I will not touch drugs. The music stars and models made it all so glamorous, but the reality is that it is not glamorous at all.
Drugs destroy lives: and I don't care how the magazines portray drug use. Those people are millionaires, but I am not. I would end up on a drug programme and in a great deal of legal troubles. Worse than that, I'd be a prison cell, being beaten up by my cell mate every day.

You might think it was worth it if someone you were close to was saved by it as a result. It happens so commonly that it can' t be ignored.. it's not one person every several years. It's 23 people on average every single year. That is kind of a lot for a bridge, as that's not the intended purpose of it... I think it would be good for them to figure out how to prevent such deaths if it's possible. However, I have personal experience with someone dying this way, so I have a perspective that aligns with that.
Things can surely look different whenever it becomes personal. But creating laws to meet each personal consideration just isn't practical.
If they have the funds for it, then why do you have issue with it being used for this purpose? Money can be saved up or allocated for something without taking away from something else in the process... I mean, if they were taking funds from services that feed people and would cause people to starve, then I'd have a problem with it because that would be a WTF decision lol

Walking on a sandy footpath that is a designated off lead area for dogs. Suddenly hurtling round the corner a lycra clad brainless moron on a bike. He did not look up he did not swerve an inch and he did not slow down. I held my ground. Making sure my dog's on the other side of me and safe. God forbid if he'd hit one they would have been dead.... mind you so would he...

It's sometimes tempting... A strong stick in the spokes... No maybe not but they would think twice in future

They can be downright selfish.
Have you ever noticed that the lycra cyclists always look really, really miserable. Where as, every other cyclist looks content enough.

Once someone did that to me and actually hit me. Problem is, I am a tough, big lass and the lad on the bike went ass over tea kettle and hurt his arm and his $2000 bike was scrap. He tried to get in my face about it but considering I just had a few scratches and bruises and stepped right eye to eye with him he whimpered off swearing that I somehow, on a walking path only, planned the whole thing and was a b**ch for ever existing.

Don't you just love how some people at fault love to blame someone else for their mistakes?
Two big kids took my trike off of me when I was about 7. I ran after him with a stick, and stuck it through the front wheel. The kid somersaulted and landed on his face and front. I couldn't believe it, as he started crying. Big kids don't cry lol
His mate was stunned, and just said "wait till he gets up, you have had it." I took my trike and scarpered.

This quote stood out to me: there are people always quick to blame others: when - in fact - they are the one in the wrong.
I'd say also that there is a difference between accepting responsibility - which is a "grown up" thing to do - and blaming oneself. The two often get confused. Realising where you've gone wrong is a mature thing to do: but blaming yourself for other people's behaviour isn't right.
Often people victims of abuse get the two mixed up. They'll say in therapy "But I was told to take responsibility for my actions." No: they were told to acknowledge their feelings and behaviour, not believe themselves in the wrong for other people's problems. There is wisdom in knowing the difference between these two things.
Just another thought.

Last month when the family got together at my oldest brother's house. I had to take a picture of a picture he had on his wall. My brother and his wife, are very very straight. To the point, if he told me he was off to become a monk, I would ask him "Which order, and where was it?"

I saw that too. They get younger. I wonder sometimes though as I have seen people teaching their grandchildren how to drive. The case I saw was when I was leaving my mum's one time. A man who lived at the end of her row was letting his grandson steer the car down the hill into it's parking position. The grandson was sat on his grandfather's knees.
