Before you moan about the price of petrol where you are...This is the price per litre here in Netherlands today. Well this was at 9am who knows what it could be later on...

It's in the region of 2.1 euro here, I noticed at one garage today although you can get it cheaper in most places. It has gone up in the last few days and is expected to go up further.
I'm kind of surprised they didn't call the authorities after that.
Housing associations in the UK are two things, very overworked and very undermanned. Once somebody been out to the flat and got no answer it probably went into another pile saying further action needed but that pile could be 6 feet high so by the time they got to her ...yeah we know the rest of the story.
I called at a patient's once. No reply. The neighbour said they saw him go in last night. They called the housing association, who said they would call with a master key later that morning.
I never heard from him again, so presumed the worse.

I was impressed by the housing association.
You remind me of a very traumatic experience of a young speech therapist locally a few years back. She visited a patient and let herself into the house, as we often needed to do with physically challenged people, and found them dead. Luckily it was a short time but it was one thing that was always in the back of our minds. Luckily I never had that happen to me.

I am not religious in any form but I do know that once a person has died what's left behind is simply a shell the real essence of the person has gone.
I've been with people in their last hours and for most there has been a peace about them an acceptance of whats to come. Its those left behind who have difficulty.

My dad is a scientist and would think those people believing the earth to be flat to be dimwits. My dad really knows his mathematics and physics.* I guess that is why I am the way I am: but that is another story.
*Although plenty of people who aren't qualified in mathematics and physics know that the world is not flat**.
**This should go in the thread "things that annoy you"!
Without delving too deep into the depths of the psyche of the certain people who claim to be flat-earthers, the fact is most of them know full well the earth is not actually flat, no matter what they claim. Their claims and support on these matters are more a political-religious backlash at what they view as a world not willing to acquiesce to a world view they would prefer to live in where science and rational thought are not held in high regard but rather the opposite.

A report I came across...
For quite some years the Golden Gate Bridge is being fitted with a steel net to save suicide jumpers. Apparently this scenic bridge is a romantic draw for suicidal jumpers. On average 23 people die there every year.
The original cost was estimated at $48 million. Today they've spent $214 million and more will be needed to complete the net.
Now, I'm sure some "spare of the moment" jumpers may be saved. But some who are turned away, may just find another location. So it would seem the net won't end all 23 annual deaths.
Safety is a concern of course as is humanity. But over $214 million to save at most 23 people a year? Gotta wonder.

What figure would you find acceptable to save such lives as these?

That's an old game to play.
Drug statistics indicate that there have been about 100,000 overdose deaths in the USA due to China's export of cocaine laced with fentanyl and all since the border was opened to the Mexican drug cartels.
Yes, I think the $214 million might be spent more wisely. I'm wondering how many jumpers were addicts.
