Well I have read that entire thread and frankly I don't see what the problem is beyond the bickering that was taking place. I really don't think Cat was trying to cause problems but that's just me. What I am having trouble with is this...it seems like only certain people are allowed to discuss these things and others are not. Those who aren't different get accused of causing trouble when sometimes they are trying to understand what is happening in this new world we're in. I don't partake in these discussions simply because if I say something someone doesn't like I am automatically gonna get pounced on. I think it seems unfair for only some people to be allowed to have an opinion and others are supposed to shut their pieholes. But again...that's just me. I myself didn't grow up with these new things that have been introduced to our culture and thrust upon us to deal with. And honestly it's a little unnerving. But we can't say anything without people screaming hate speech so...we tip toe around and don't mention it. However they can talk about it all they want. Just seems very one sided. This is just based on what I read on forums and not just this one. Anyhoo...I'll be back eventually. I'm on an extended social media hiatus.

And again I say its not about the discussion as such , I think any of us who are happy in the gender were arrived with are going to have questions about those who are not, it is the way its approached.. When talking about sensitive subject especially involving vunerable people then approach from love and support not dismissiveness and contention.
Raising a subject just to try to understand is one thing but raising or starting a discussion to put peoples backs up or make someone feel bad about themselves or to point and say 'ýou' are not welcome is wrong and cowardly.
I dont personally understand people who fall in love and marry objects.. Its not even legal here but I would say if they are not harming anyone and it makes them happy so be it.. Im not going to point them out and raise issues tjust to make that person feel bad

I have refreshed my memory by re-reading the thread that started this off, and I still see it as targetting anti trans prejudice. I didn't regard it as 'hate speech' but simply prejudicial, and probably through culture. Had it been 'hate speech' dealing with it would have been a lot easier.
As moderators the three of us can only do our best, and on this occasion our discussion over the issue was very brief, as we were all of the exact same opinion.
TBH it is not really a problem we have come across before. The only other incident was over race, and that was dealt with in a lot less reasonable manner, but we have learned from that.
Speaking for myself, after seeing all the responses from all who joined in this thread, I still think we are on the right track.

There's nothing wrong with inquiring minds or seeking to understand. That has never been the issue. I've told you already that you have tactfully asked about this very topic, and that was not a problem. You didn't talk down about anyone in the process or say anything that could make someone feel less accepted out of your curiosity if they were to read your comments.
Others sometimes word things in a way that can be very hurtful or make someone feel like they don't belong, and we want to make sure that we keep that type of talk out.
Cat isn't in trouble.. nobody is! We just want to make sure moving forward we try to avoid getting too deeply into this topic because it causes too much contention, so it's the main reason we had to mention something as a warning to try to avoid anything going further or getting really nasty.
I really hope this isn't going to keep you from being active again.... but we're going to continue to keep the peace as much as we can. That's our goal... not as a way to make people feel like they can't have opinions, so I'm sorry if this made you feel that way.
Some may feel offended by a post and others may not. Who's to be the judge?
Truly knowing the intent of the person's post, that's the trick. And is one reason I continue to advocate for "insensitivity training".
The one offended... or moderators are the judges ;p
If someone files a complaint, then we may have to do something about it.... usually it can mean an edit of offensive material and/or a talking to the offender.
We can't always know the intent of someone's post... we can kind of only give people the benefit of the doubt if they say something that comes across as if they want to offend on purpose (some people enjoy this for fun)... but some people do just lack tact and don't actually want to hurt anyone's feelings.
I tend to hope/assume people don't mean to be rude or offensive when it comes to members on here at least!
Just really a statement, and please take as such, I am one who is totally against the current wave of political correctness and pussyfooting around contentious subjects. We have all seen things raised in the media in the past on gender, race, religion etc which have inflamed people, later to be shown as one side of a very much more complex issue, which they all mostly are.
For me, anyone who is open with their thoughts, as long as they are only stating their view and not forcing it on anyone else, will generally get my repect, even if I totally disagree and don't discuss further for whatever reason.
I take my hat off to the moderators here as I know from experience it is not easy to know when to jump in and put the brakes on a train swaying on a downward slope. People do get emotionally involved with issues they have strong views on. It's not easy to calm down and help is often needed.
One (surreal?) view on things I often use is to imagine you were with the person you are arguing with, maroooned on a desert island. What relevance would the argument have then? Would it really matter? - Just my way of escaping from the stress of reality

I respect your pov, but I feel that people will only criticise being pc until it affects them. Then they will cry bigot.
In the case of the discussion that we have disapproved of, there is a minority being attacked to their very core. It is no different from telling a man with a low sperm count that he is not a man. < That is a discussion that we would not encourage here either.

Being somewhat of a rebel, I don't agree as I have often been on the receiving side of criticism and winced as I had to grin and bear the inevitable. Along with my desert island approaches to conflict I have another view which sees people as animals, which they really are, with generally pretty predictable reactions. They cannot ever be totally controlled by a societies rules.

I understand that here and my "Just a statement" comment was an attempt to seperate things a little. More an approach I take than a direct comment on the subject of the thread. It was also to show that it is possible to read an inflamatory comment and, although disagreeing, not rise to the bait, intended or otherwise, whether agreeing or not.

I am not certain that we are not comparing apples and oranges. Maybe I am just not seeing past the discussion that we are trying to discourage.
Can you give me an example of the sort of criticism you are referring to?

I think we may be a little bit at crossed purposes here. I thought afterwards and realised I was thinking more personally than in the general sense with most people in this:
I respect your pov, but I feel that people will only criticise being pc until it affects them. Then they will cry bigot.
My tendency is actually to go against the herd in the first instance as I realise how easy it is to be swayed by public opinion. Indeed it is quite often that public opinion is often swayed to the point that it is not easily changed (even corrected) just by the voice or organisation shouts the loudest. Even by revulsion. This is where all these "false flag" operations that they speak of in the Ukraine intentions come from. Often called "the fog of war". In this way I often, at least initially, appear at odds to people. In that way I have often been 'sent to Coventry'. I prefer to avoid such scenes here so don't speak, more often than not. It can be hard and even dangerous to be different.
An interesting example, obviously not directly relevant, which I have no previous knowledge on. I have just watched an episode of "Forensic Detectives" on TV in which a doctor was charged and convicted of murder of his wife. He was later found not to have done it, but suffered 10 years in jail. The original trial was pushed through and lots of evidence left out as the police, other authorities and the general public, for the most part, wanted quick results and made assumptions. It's not unusual. Assumptions cost lives!
Taking your point about "criticise pc". I think that a lot of this is similar to being a "jobsworth" or following the motions. Being "pc" seems to be more a buzzword to be enforced, or the latest fad, rather than people actually thinking about others (of all feelings in a disputed subject). I often see it as a let's steamroller the changes through, rather than looking more deeply into the real situation.
I do take pris's point though. We should just move on. It gets deep and messy to do otherwise.
First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me
Or... The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good men do nothing
Edmund Burke.
If we do not speak out visitors to this site might well think we are all of that type. I do not wish to be grouped with those kinds of small minded people. Also if we do not speak out we condone those words with our silence.
I must have missed some posts because I never saw anything in that thread that I read that gave me any inkling that Cat was saying that anyone didn't belong. I saw no attack on her part so I still don't understand what the big deal is. Anyway, I have noticed that there's a bit of Christian bashing on here at times. I post something Christian and stories get told of bad memories and crap that seem to be pushing against what was posted. There's a couple of us here to my knowledge and I don't feel comfy talking about it when I get told that most Christians are just judgmental. All humans are judgmental to some degree. None of us are perfect. And I'm sick to death of all this pc. On Facebook for example...if we are chatting in a stream we have to use leet speak in order to say the words weeds or bananas FFS. I'm not a 10 yo writing secret messages for my friends on there. How much further is this gonna go? Are we eventually not gonna be able to say anything without offending someone? We're damn close to it right now. I expect someday someone will order a hotdog and someone will get outraged because their kid identifies as one and then that will get changed. I don't normally get this irritated but, I'm at wits end this week with all this stuff. Anyway, cya when I cya.

This quote stood out to me. All I ever say is love your neighbour: no matter their religion. I don't get involved in bible or religious talk. In fact, I wrote a post a few months back with my light hearted version of the 10 commandments. Just for a light hearted contribution to a thread about religion.

I don't really understand most of your points, but there is a fundamental difference between starting a thread attacking a group, and responding to a thread that says something you disagree with.
It has nothing to do with being pc. It is all about treating everybody with respect.
I regularly see and hear a definition of attacking minorities which is along the lines of "It is not bigoted if you can use the word 'black' as the subject, and the comment still works".

I've had chats already for people not to speak about their religious opinions in your diary, particularly in a negative way, so if you still notice anything like that, then let me know, and me or another mod can PM whoever.
That would be more reserved for the religion section where people can share their thoughts freely and have friendly debates if they are willing, but debates of that nature should not be happening in diaries without permission... so if you don't want to have that type of discussion, then feel free to state it to remind others to drop it or move it to the appropriate area I can always relocate posts.
I don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable in their own diary.... so let me know if someone makes you feel that way so we can address it. We all have boundaries, and we should do our best to try not to overstep them if we're aware of them. What one person doesn't consider a big deal to say could be a huge deal to another, and unfortunately, we don't realize that until after the fact, but I know most of us are willing to do better once we know we hurt someone even unintentionally.
