What Appliances/Gadgets Do You Have In Your Household?

I don't have an electric one. I have one I put on the stove.

We were dreadful with kettles wearing some out within months cheap or expensive made no difference. But since last year we have a domo my tea water boiler. Which just boils one cup of water each time. It saves electricity because you dont boil extra water youre not using. With just us two in the house it works for us.

Ours is a few years old now. I got the current one as a replacement for the same model which failed under guarentee. It's only a cheap one. They do seem to be very hit and miss.

I'm not sure about that as the liquid should keep the element cool enough anyway. Aside from obvious things like leaks I find that it is the electrical contacts wearing through arcing. The contact springs weaking and the plastic in plastic kettles becoming brittle with age. I do wince though when OH boils the kettle with a minute amount of water in it though. Last time I was looking for a new kettle I did come across one with a variable thermostat which enables setting below actual boiling, but I think the intention was more for particular drinks. It does sound sensible to switch off below actual boiling though as it's seldom that point is really needed.

It doesn't actually with ours as it's hidden somewhere under the bottom metal plate but that would act as a heat sink. I think that one of the problems with elements and hard water is that scale buildup can insulate the element and cause it's temperature to increase which can be a cause of premature failure. That's my thinking anyway. Over recent years, with their metal plate bottoms instead of exposed elements, I have not come across an actual element failure. It usually seems to be the contacts.

Got a cheap one again now. If it serves me for another 2 years before it dies, then, I think a total of $50 for 4 years wouldn't be that too bad, right?

The conversion of our $50 here is 25.36 in UK pound currently. The well branded kettles here cost more than $100. There's not even a guarantee if that would last for years.
