In support of this: Apparently the picture of holding hands on a deathbed with a loved one, and sharing all the thing you wanted to say is very much a movie plot.
In reality, the dying relative is usually unconscious, and has been for some time.
It was not the actual moment of death but only a short while before (an hour or two) but, when my dad died, I did get opprtunity to say goodbye. He was in turmoil (it was dementia / alzheimers) and it was disturbing but as I held his hand, saying he could rest and said that he need not worry as we would take care of mum he seemed to settle considerably. It's making me tearful writing now but I am glad it happened that way.
My brother was there when my mum passed away, and that was like your dad. She had dementia too. I spoke to her on the phone, and apparently she did open her eyes when she heard my voice.
I am just back from getting a refund from B&M. we bought a huge bag of peanuts for the birds, but they have gone mouldy. Apparently [google] that is very unhealthy for them, and the gas it gives off can be carcinogenic for us.

Mouldy peanuts kill. Who would have thought that?
Parrots love peanuts in shells but they are prone to mould and more so in ones destined for bird food so we feed our parrot human grade nuts to reduce the risk ..

Yesterday was a great day. The University made an offer to two key personnel and after a few negotitations back and forth, they accepted the offers. My hand will be free to move on to the next project soon, and that is, working to renovate our health science campus. An eciting year ahead of us. Two new campuses will be added this year.
I dove into Chapter 12 of one of my novels-in-progress. 😁 I'm not starting this editing period at the beginning because it's already had lots of polishing. Best to go near the end, fix 'er up, and tend to the middle next. 😉 I hope I remember these characters well enough - the original idea for the book came about 20 yrs ago (!) and I've picked it up many times since then, but life (and other inspiration) always interrupts.
Yesterday I did some tidying in the garden as planned. I think I have all the brambles sorted for a while and managed to work my way around from the other direction to last time so I have a through route round the back of everything. I still managed to get stung by nettles on the bum though lol. I was cutting a holly tree which had self seeded by the apple tree. I dediced that a couple of foot between them was too small and it would be a big problem in the future. I used my large loppers to cut through the trunk but it was almost too much and in my efforts I fell backward onto a waiting nettle

I attacked the brambles yesterday too. I only found half a dozen seedlings.
I know I shouldnt laugh and its not funny but last night OH decided to try some cooking and doing his best Jamie Oilver onion chopping he sliced a layer of skin off the end of his thumb. It bled like mad ( he takes blood thinners) but we finally got it stopped then this morning he went into the shower and I heard him yelling for help. As the plaster got wet it came off his thumb started bleeding and the shower looked like the red sea!
So I had to wash and dry him help him get dressed and stop the bleeding again... He pulled such faces and made such funny poses as I tried to dry him I ended up sitting on the floor laughing so hard I had tears running down my cheeks.. I would never have been a good nurse!
Major cooking going on... My daughters birthday and we are making , egg fried rice ( nasi goreng) beef rendang, chicken teriyaki, sate ajam and lemon chicken plus prawn crackers and spring rolls for a special dinner.

I was victorious in going out this afternoon for the best bakery bread around, plus a couple varieties of non-dairy milk. (Downtown store has very little milk. We're not even close to the recent flooding and people are panic-buying. Oy.)
I also got tea at Starbucks while I was at it, but I should probably stop doing that - there's a better coffeeshop in town and the Starbucks employees just can't seem to be consistent enough to beat them. My excuse is that the Starbucks is conveniently located in the grocery store...
I also tidied up a bit this morning, booked the middle guy's second COVID vaccination online, and sewed up a long tear in one of the fitted sheets.
Waiting to see if the younger sister calls in a bit. Maybe I should get out the package of leek soup to make while we're talking. (Mama-only food, since I haven't convinced any of my boys to like leeks yet. Where's their Welsh spirit? LOL)
My cleaning service showed up late today but I was busy planning the Thanksgiving meal with my sister's catering service and had to meet with the gardener afterward so I did not have time to talk to them. I am wondering what they did. This was only the second time they came to this house. They told me they spent 4 hours cleaning the house.

I hope you gave him a lollipop, for being so brave?

I offered and his response was typically English and not to be repeated !

I recall not long after I qualified, this 5 year old was coming for a repeat treatment. She fell over and grazed her knee. Not enough for blood, just scraped.
She was utterly inconsolable, tears were running down her cheeks, and she was sobbing terribly. I had no experience with little children, either clinic or irl.
So, I just put a little elastoplast on it.
WOW, the sun came out.
She stopped crying immediately, and smiled at me. There was no mention of it again. I did her treatment, and off she went.
I learned a lot about pain that day. Stuff I had never been taught.

I finished my Christmas letter this evening. Haven't written one in a couple years, but memories of my cousin Laura doing a great job of hers have inspired me.
Tried a new recipe for waffles today, and it was just what I needed. I missed the "fluffiness" with my previous whole wheat recipe. Hopefully the middle guy will adjust to the addition of coconut milk in it, since the last was also totally milk-free... Mama prefers fluffy!
