I don't tend to use the big supermarkets much so haven't tried these. You just scan the items, put them in your trolley, and pay what is on the scanner? You don't show them at checkouts? How do they know you have scanned everything?
Sorry. I should have explained that a bit better
Once you have completed your shopping there is an area next to the main checkouts that is basically a set of payment machines. There is a store assistant hanging about if you need any help. You scan a barcode on the screen with your handset then your scanned items are downloaded to the machine and the total displayed. Then you choose a payment option.
This system can be open to abuse though. Anyone could place an item in their shopping bag without scanning it, however, supermarkets can do spot-checks on your purchases to see that everything tallies.
Items that have security tags on them; e.g. meat, alcohol, clothes, etc., set off a red light on the till so an assistant comes over to remove the tag. Once you have finished your purchase you still have to leave through a detector machine so it is not worth it to try to be naughty.
Some honesty required then.....
I will give it a go next time I go. I go for ryevita fruit crunch. Only the big supermarkets sell it.

Honesty is definitely the best policy
The biggest benefit we saw was by-passing the enormous queues at the normal checkouts. We have yet to do a scan-and-shop and have to wait for a free till to use.
In our supermarkets there are usually about eight machines to use.
I don't think you will go back to normal shopping again once you have tried it

I don't think honesty is the best policy: the days I've wished people weren't honest build up.
As for self-service checkouts: I like them. They're easy to use and pose no problem for me. I've used them plenty of times over the years. So I agree with you there, ButterflyMaiden!
A good day for me, and the drive home through the Forest was gorgeous.
I don't like driving in the rain though, so I am grateful for some dry days
Watched the last part of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King after our evening meal.
We had a short walk through the Forest around our home when the movie had finished. A beautiful evening for a stroll
Was LOTR good? Ive never seen anything of the film. Maybe because it was one of my favourite books as a child. Does it stand up well compared to the book?
LOTR was a goodish film, but not a patch on the book. I actually thought the mid 1980's cartoon film was better, but it only covered the first book really.
The weakest transfer from book to film was Gollum. His character lost so much.

We enjoyed the film but we have never read the book, so can't compare

Sometimes thats the best way. Ive seen several films after reading the books and just wondered because they bore no resemblance to the book. One of the worst was the hunt for red October a book I could barely put down, a film I could barely stay awake for. !

I liked that film but have never read the book. I will have to look out for it.
I had a long walk yesterday in the lovely weather. I came across a lesser point later though when I came to tend my hydroponics. The plants drink well in sunny weather. I made up lots of nutrients for the next few days. I wish I had room for a larger storage container but no. I had just got back from my walk and unlocked the door when my stepson drove into the drive on a surprise visit. No real reason, except that he was on a weaks leave and was having a break from painting his fencing, but it was good to catch up.

For me, that was 'The Time Traveller's Wife!" I so looked forward to the film after loving the book.
Most of my day today is going to be taken up cooking, at the moment I have a date and walnut loaf in the oven ...two loaves of bread are proving and I will be juicing lemons and cutting ginger while that cooks then later on I plan to make some fruit pies so I doubt my apron will get much rest today

Cassie, stop it, you are making my mouth water and I can't do anything about it

I'll soon be reading "Girl With A Pearl Earring" but have never seen the film.

I took care of kitchen cleanup this morning before taking the youngest to an end-of-school-year OT assessment. Fun for him to show where's he at physically, and time for me to read!
We were able to get to the jewelry store before the appt, so I have my two new rings! I usually have trouble with a bit of swelling in my fingers during summer heat, so I may not wear them much until fall, but they're mine now!
I played around a bit with the blender this afternoon to attempt a nice, thick vanilla milkshake. The results weren't too bad, but it might be easier to soften the ice cream a bit, stir it by hand, and add a bit of milk and a little vanilla syrup (or other flavourings). We'll see! In the meantime, I know where to buy great milkshakes if I want to pay for them. (Still planning to try the poutine at the new burger place as well.)
The kids are away for the evening, and I'm watching the hockey game and chatting online. Found a couple forums to try that are "co-ed."
