I have my computer cleaned once or twice a year. On goes the virus checker and whatnot.
I AM an avid computer user: as you all know. I keep myself on the Internet. I guess I see my online work as a career. It isn't an office career or a career IRL, but it IS a job.
Anyhow, I had my computer cleaned a few weeks ago. I definitely am vigilant.
My husband works at a technology company. One of the things he used to do is to evaluate the engineers' ideas for patent filing. It is not cheap to file for patents here so ideas must be evaluated carefully. He told me some of the weird ideas they came up with that had nothing to do with the nature of the business (telecommunication network) such as how to keep the coffee hot with the power expensed from the computer equipment. The idea was never materialized.

Some weird ideas have led to millions for some people. You never know what will become the next big thing.

There are amazing ideas being developed all the time. And you're right: you don't know what will become the next big thing! And knowing there'll be even more amazing technology is very exciting.

Oh definitely, but a technolocy global 100 can't be the one that invented coffee warmer very questionable to investors.
A large number of people who get into support for the disabled are originally driven by the need to do something for a family member. My old boss was one of these. So too was the owner of the US company who provided the software for Stephen Hawking's communication equipment.

Random question: do you clean the computer physically as well? Sometimes when I look at the dirt around or beneath the keyboard area, I wonder if I should bring it to a service center or something like that for a thorough clean-up.

You can usually clean them out with compressed air. Even between the keys. If the keys stop working properly, you can usually fix that with rapid presses on that key for a few minutes.
Thank you for the tips. When I was trying to sell one of my old laptops a few years ago, the clerk said that the screen had some kind of fungi on it even with a protective layer on it. No idea if he's lying though, but it made me wonder if I should clean the laptop regularly like I run antivirus to check the software.

It's not enough just to run the anti virus, you need to run the anti fungal too....

An interesting point! A lot of electronic equipment has been made in different versions for temperate or tropical climates as the issues of very high humidity are very detrimental to operation. Are there different versions for the tropics or is it just the case that reliance is made on the general air conditioning?
While at work I came across many cases of grubby keyboards which are obviously covered in bacteria and, especially in the past, nicotine stained screens and cases from the user(s) smoking really were a negative.
You can use a vacuum attachment, too, more so for desktop computers, though. I used one the other day on my keyboard, but the keys on my keyboard are a bit different and have a visible space around each of them, so it's a bit easier for me to do so. I just unplug it first lol
I am really against it but am not surprised that it has come. This surveillance in technology has been an issue for years and not gone away. I remember reading about the NSA being against secure file encription as they argued that they could not easily crack it if needed. I do get a bit paranoid about things sometimes. Recently I have been wondering if, because companies can put cookies on your computer and read them, can they actually read the cookies put on by other companies too hence form a picture of your life.
With respect to (for instance) pornographic material. A point that can be realised about any flow of information is that, beside the actual information, there is that trademark flow. What I am getting at is what was known as 'operational intelligence' in WWII. Besides actually being able to read signals traffic it useful to be able to collate the number and type of signals themselves. For example a group of soldiers in a different place would show themselves just by the signals they produced.
Ok so I have deviating here but what I am getting at is that paedophiles (for example) will show themselves just by their actions online so companies like Apple, or more likely internet service providers, could just as readily report suspicious activity to the authorities who would then be better placed to investigate legitamately. It would then avoid the issue of invasion of privacy, or at least refer it out of private hands. Don't forget that if things are driven undercover then naughty files will just tend to be heavily encripted so Apple will not be able to read them so all they will be able to see are everyone's holiday snaps anyway. The real players in the field will find a way so it will mainly be the small time pervert who will get caught. Maybe a plus but balaced against the minus to the overall population?
I do feel though that under the guise of security both Apple and Microsoft are getting more and more 'big brother'.
I know.. people always abuse things. If only we could trust they really were only going to use this for pedophiles, but they'll go after people for just about anything.. And there are some things that are illegal that I don't even consider to be something that should be illegal ;p
