What is the structure like? Does it allow for fast service compared to the U.S. ones?
I am a shop wanderer, so I don't use it, but it seems effective enough, and those I have asked say it is easier.
I am the same.
It can be an irritating system in that people pick things off the shelves and then stand in front of them scanning rather than moving on so, although it is only an extra moment or two, at really busy times it could easily increase jams. I tend to go when it is quiet though so no problem. The thing I find is that they reduce the staff on the tills in an attempt to push people into using self scan. The rebel in me makes me fight back though so, although I instantly move for other shoppers, I make myself as big as I can with my trolley in the checkout queue. My approach is one of reducing the modern approach to rush everything and it's attendant stress. I move like a sloth when I can - relax when I can, if only for a few moments.
They are gaining in popularity in the uk. We scan the items as we go along, with a shop supplied scanner.
Sam's Club offers "Scan and Go." I downloaded the Sam's Club App, and I'm able to go entirely paperless. I show my membership card displayed on my phone to gain entry. I select "start scanning" on the app and scan the codes as I put things in my cart. Once I've paid through the app, I'm presented with a QR code which is scanned on exit.
To get gas, I select "Fuel" and scan the QR code on the pump. Once connected with the pump, I select the fuel grade and start pumping. When I'm done, my phone (and, of course, the pump) displays the total.
I'm emailed a receipt for every transaction...quite convenient.
I am not sure how far it has got as I don't use it and don't have a smartphone but they have got close to that here.
It's already current in some places but they do seem to be rapidly introducting parking charges by phone only, using apps, with no ability at all of paying cash here too.I do wonder how vast the use of apps will become over the next couple of years.

I use the self-service checkout when shopping alone. It is easier and I prefer it to standing in a long queue. It IS gaining in popularity here in Britain. In fact, now it has boomed and there is no going back. Even the local library uses a self service checkout. It saves the staff time and leaves them to do other important jobs in the library.
It became popular during the pandemic. They already had self-scanning lanes, but one would have to use the touch screen and the scan gun. One also needed a printed receipt to exit the warehouse. The only way to go totally paperless is to use "Scan and Go." I rather like it, as I just scan things while putting them in the cart. By the time I'm finished, I don't have to wait in line for either manned or self-service lanes. I just leave through the Scan and Go lane which is outfitted with a camera above the lane. The QR code on my phone is proof of payment which I present at the exit.
I often go self-service. We have had the scan and go in the library for a long time. Same in the big/local supermarket and a few big retail stores. I like it when I don't have to go to the till and pay when I fill up my tank, too. As I arrive at participating petrol stations, the camera will read my car plate number (registered on the app) and unlock the pump. Payment and receipt via phone app. The thing that I am never keen (yet!) is having digital wallet. I don't know. It's either I'm scared of getting hacked, etc or I'm traditional,
I haven't explored it but I read that it is very smart. Plagiarism checkers is a having a hard time with it because "it produces different answers every time (The Hill article)." Generative AI is the future as long as it doesn't hallucinate.
Will ChatGPT write like Stephen King or Anne Rice? Maybe not yet but possibly in the future? Some people (on the net, yup, google it) are already using ChatGPT as their teaching buddy or writing buddy.

There are a lot of people who do reject it though. For one, I am seldom in a rush and like to chat, which I do to the till operator at the checkout as well as people in the queue. Yes, a lot of people do use self checkout or scan and go but I do find it interesting how often I pass the self checkouts and find them less than busy, the staff often going to queues at the checkouts and try to coax them toward the self checkouts. There is apparently also a major problem of shoplifting with some people not scanning their goods correctly, or not at all.
The University where I am working at subscribed to Chat GPT for evaluation. I am not at all impressed. It's a few levels more sophisticated than Ask Jeeves but it's prone for plagiarism, and wrong answers when it involves high level math. It's nothing more than a chat bot.
People tend to get hyped with new AI technologies but there are reasons why most academic entities have reservations about it.

That does sound useful, for anonymous large shops. Little ones, I like to have the option of sharing a few words with the salespersons.

I listened to a radio chat about it. Apparently, it will 'read' the listener and reply as it thinks the listener will like. As I said, I think it will be a great boon for the widowed.

Yeah, something like " write me a love letter everyday". The professors are all for it because they can tell their students to go to Chat GPT to get answers. But they get paid to cater to students so... On another note, It's funny that, according to some source, the answers from Chat GPT tend to be liberal leaning.

That's the point the review I heard was making. The chatbot reads you, and gives the appropriate type of answer to you. Had that reviewer been right wing, so the answers would have reflected.

It seems similar to the intelligence of advert tareting on social media as they always seem to appear to track your mood. With me it's sometimes a step or two behind though as I chop and change often. A chatbot sounds interesting as I do wonder how well it would follow me. I tend to fly off at a tangent, even mid sentence sometimes

It's actually apolitical. The answer it generates just tend to be accurate as far as the various scientific fields of study as well as more common sense answers that tend to get associated with the left only because idiots like to play politics in the same fashion as one plays a sports game. The only time ChatGPT gets liberal is when it starts getting woke to levels where reality is obstructed. It's always the same shit. Wokeness is essentially the same thing as various Christian teachings from the past only that it switched sports teams. U.S. politics don't mean anything.

It doesn't seem to show on here.
Is that an insult?
No.
Here I tend to take things at a slower pace than would sometimes be the case in other places. Real life, for instance, or if I used the shoutbox continuously for live chat. That way I think a bit more about what I am saying and who everyone is.
