My husband asked me if we should have a pet when we settle into the new place next year. I am not sure, I travel a few times a year - 1-2 weeks each time, the pet boarding place charges $90/day.

Round here boarding is around 15 - 20 bucks a day ....
Well this little man is 3 today. Which means hes now been with us longer than he was with his old owners.
He hasnt been easy. The people bought him without thinking it through, a male beagle(ish) and them both in their 70's they didnt train him and didnt walk him, he had no manners and no leash training.
But hes getting there, he no longer tries to grab food from our hands or knock the plates out of our grip, he hasnt chewed or destroyed anything for over a year now and he can be trusted to have the run of the house without us scared to death hes going to chew something.
He no longer reacts to everyone or every dog he sees hes learned that his main focus should be us.
The hunting and pulling is what we are still working on hence the head collar, hes 20 kilos but he pulled so hard he snapped the fastening on a 50 kilo rated lead ( a good one too) with the head collar hes learned he cant pull but he still tracks deer and can still bark and most importantly eat!
There was a nice walk in the forest this morning and there will be cake this afternoon..Im waiting for the look on his face when he realises hes only getting a slice and not the whole thing!
It sounds to me as if it is just a matter of time before he is 100%. Once they realise what you want, and you are firm about it, they will usually want to please you.
We drop our dogs off with my SO's mom when we go out of town. "Grandma's house" lol
We already had no plans to really travel these next few years anyway because our dogs are very elderly and nearing the end.. we want to be with them. The pandemic just cemented that for us.
My brother and sisters leave their dog with my parents' housekeeper. We still let her live in the house so my siblings think that she should do things for them still.

I just can't do that to her.
It doesn't sound unreasonable, as long as she can cope.

She has an 89 year old mother to take care of and she also gets a job with the county.
She is taking such great care of the house that my sisters did not want to sell the house.
My broker told me he just sold a house right around the block for almost $200k over the asking price but I really have no energy to argue with my sisters.
One of our dogs passed away the other day. She had heart failure for the past year, so we knew it would happen eventually, but she took a turn for the worse kind of suddenly over the weekend.....
You always think you'll have more time, and whatever time we do get to have them in our lives never feels like enough.

I am so sorry for your loss. You're right it doesn't matter how old they are or if you know it's coming it is a blow that leaves a hole in your heart.
Run free little one and may happy memories of her fill the hole she has left ...

Oh Heather, so sorry to hear it. We do fall in love with them, and their life spans are so short really.
Ours, though very fit and healthy, has reached the predicted age to begin worrying. 12 -14 for dalmations and collies, and she is 12.

Im so chuffed with George. when he came to us the only thing he had was a blanket his old owner said it was the only thing he didn't destroy. The old owner told me he was very destructive.
Not only has this proved not to be true but George has taught himself a trick. whenever he hears our front gate open and close he runs to the front door to collect whatever post has come. He then gently brings that to me in exchange for a treat.
Im so proud. And it proves what I have always said, destructive dogs are bored dogs give a dog plenty of mental and physical exercise and they will be contented happy dogs.

When our dog was puppy new to us, she chewed an aglet. Luckily. we caught her at it, and was able to tell her off.
She has never damaged anything since. The only thing she ever chews is her nylon chew bones.
Rant alert... Common sense . Apperently not so common.
Today we took the boys to the playground. This isnt a dog park in the American sense of the word its one of a number of small fenced in areas where dogs are allowed off lead, everywhere else in the town they have to be on the lead. So we are throwing a ball for Murphy and George is chasing. George has zero recall, hes a hound and he lives up to it. A lady rocks up in her mobility scooter with two little dogs and just flings open the gate.. WE scramble to grab George before he heads off over the horizon. Then she lets her dogs off and they start yapping and snapping.. Then she throws a ball for them.. George goes over to say hello ( he is a social butterfly) and gets snapped at, she thinks its funny..She throws the ball and her dogs take turns to chase the ball and snap or bark in Georges direction..she thinks this is so amusing... Murphy had his own ball and isnt possesive anyway so he just kept well clear of them. Luckily Murphy had pretty much had enough so shortly after she arrived we left but honestly stupid isnt in it.
If my two had been aggressive or had ball envy like hers it could have been a bloodbath and her dogs would not have come out of it well. Why oh why didnt she first ask if it was ook to join us and if her dogs are that badly behaved around a ball keep her damn ball in her pocket.

I tend to like dog owners, but it is not compulsory.

Some dog owners just don't have a clue and I am sure they don't in other aspects of their lives either...
