The phrase was coined by William Congreve, in The Mourning Bride, 1697:
Musick has Charms to sooth a savage Breast, To soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak. I've read, that things inanimate have mov'd, And, as with living Souls, have been inform'd, By Magick Numbers and persuasive Sound. What then am I? Am I more senseless grown Than Trees, or Flint? O force of constant Woe! 'Tis not in Harmony to calm my Griefs. Anselmo sleeps, and is at Peace; last Night The silent Tomb receiv'd the good Old King; He and his Sorrows now are safely lodg'd Within its cold, but hospitable Bosom. Why am not I at Peace?
I think we all do believe that too. We all believe that music is a calming influence in our lives.
Yet, our generation and all those who follow have got music, literally coming out of our ears. FAR more than our parents did. It is absolutely everywhere. There is even a genre called elevator music, that we can listen to as we go around shops.
But, and here is where the analogy falls flat on it's face. Wars are common place, thuggery is common on our streets, lawbreakers are carrying guns, and even lawkeepers are being caught out being violent to innocent people.
Does music calm the beast?
There doesn't seem much supporting evidence.
Does there?

Trump would think that Congreve was talking about a savage BEAST! But, I believe that music can have a calming influence on people. Even a metal-head that has suffered through a bad day, can crank up Metallica and feel better. I believe that soothing doesn't necessarily have to mean quiet music, depending upon the individual.
Yeah, the type of music doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it. It can help with depression or anxiety if it's the right music... it is pretty fascinating. Sometimes I'll be feeling down, and I'll just listen to music all day and feel so much better.
There is another one which showed that in a car with the speedo disabled rock music tended to increase speeding by 10 -30% whereas classical music tended to sooth the driver into slowing down and most remained at or slightly under the speed limit.
Musicians, song writers, humanists, and the other artistic creatives like McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Oprah, BB King, Adele, Gandhi, Madonna, Mother Teresa, and Mariah have done more to unite us than any political official, ever.
Even here, I see social obligatory honored.
We show love to each other, not always in the same way, but with the same goals.
I once went to a theology club when I was studying. It was at lunchtime and I thought it might distract me a little.
What a waste of space those are. The 'debate' was basically a bible quote competition. If you couldn't back up anything that you were saying with a quote, then you were talking nonsense, and obviously gospel quotes always won.
As an atheist that doesn't mean I can't love religious people. Most of them are true lovers that just have a different interpretation of our beginning and end.
So, I get along quite well with them and they trust me.
Angry atheists are as bad as angry ISIS in my mind.
