I start a book... and I have to finish before ever starting a new book, but I even finish the ones I'm not into (unless I disliked it from start already, then I don't continue, but if I'm already a good portion through, then I will finish it) lol so that's how I end up being on one book for so long at times... less motivation if the story is "meh," and I'm already tired enough as it is most days, so I just don't feel up to it. If it were a book I really enjoyed, then I do think I could muster up the energy for it a bit more, but still not always.

Life is too short for books that don't hook! I'm okay with not finishing a book I didn't like, but I do want to have a strategy so that I don't start a dozen books and have them all on the go!

I used to do that, but then I struggled through a book called Blowing Up a Storm, and found that I was speed reading it, and not taking it in [which was a mercy], and I thought "Why?"
So i put it down, and dropped my persevering plan.
The youngest wasn't thrilled with any of the kids' books I took off my shelf to try with him, but we started one with bats. Takes place in Alberta, east of us. (Maybe less than 8 hours' drive that direction? I'm sure we would have passed the town mentioned on the first day of our summer road trips when I was a kid...)
I also started the first Melvin Beederman book, so he'd have part of a book he liked. The series is a funny one about a kid superhero, so we've been through it before - still good multiple times! I think all adults should read the series, too.
A question for the Christians among us. Have any of you heard of or read the books of Frank E Peretti? I picked up two of them at a junk store recently. Mr Peretti describes himself as a Christian who writes books that carry a Christian message.
I can't comment on the man himself he comes across as a bit of an extremist.
But the books were not bad, basically the story of a small town being overtaken by corrupt officialdom. But in the background there are non-Christian interventions trying to pervert the way of life. In the second and more spiritual layer of the book there are actual heavenly fights between Angels and Demons.
I quite enjoyed reading them, they were in any case something different than the usual murder guns blowing things up kind of books.

I haven't heard of him. Sometimes I have come across things that sound similar but they are not generally my cup of tea. I will keep a lookout for any though as see. Thank you

That is the joy of junk store books. As they are so cheap, you don't mind checking out different authors.

In many cases it even works out cheaper than a library membership (here) and then there are the little mini librarys outside peoples houses there you can swap for free.. even cheaper!
I LOVE my town library. It's one of my favourite local places.
I like ours too although I haven't been for some time. I don't find it as useful nowadays though as their stock of reference books is much reduced. The digital revolution has it's faults

I agree, our library used to be a beautiful old building full of charm and interesting architecture, now its been downsized and moved to a prefab add on to an old prison (the prison is beautiful, not so the add on) The older books the ones out of print and the reference books are just gone its all about the most modern top 10 best sellers ...
If thats not your cup of tea then theres not much left, thats why I like the junk stores.
There are upsides and downsides to everything. The digital age hasn't ruined the print book: people still love their paperbacks, rather than their Kindles. I can't read from a Kindle: I need a physical book, with pages I can turn.
HOWEVER, the digital age has made communication much quicker and easier. Even libraries need their computers.
All-in-all, each balances the other. Again - too - the paperback will never lose its popularity: in spite of the Kindle.

I don't get on with reading from a screen either although with technical books there is such a wealth online. Fiction is another thing though. I prefer paper. The main things I used my ipad for, apart from work it was issued for, was internet browsing and watching TV programs when in bed
These days I don't have one but don't particularly miss it.
I like all sorts as I also look around for (particularly) art books. One I got from the book exchange yesterday is titled "Antique Oriental Rugs and Carpets". This is typical of the oddities that turn up from time to time. The lovely patterns in the book have given me ideas for a different approach with my painting.
I watch too much TV. But I usually read while "watching". NETFLIX, like any other "soap opera" series, moves slowly. And that leaves plenty of time for reading.

My SO does her phone, plays games, uses her laptop, anything while watching tv. Yet often gets the play much better than I do.
I don't read anymore while the TV's on, but I used to do that. I'd either get into the show and have to go back in the book later to review, or get into the book and miss the show. (Less of a loss on the TV show!)
I set aside a specific amount of time at the end of my evenings for reading, so unless I got super-tired and went to sleep early, I always get to read each day. Whew, get my fix! Reading during the day is less predictable because it can get noisy and/or busy. I just need to declare time for the kids to read silently, don't I?

I usually read upstairs when the TV is on as I find it difficult to concentrate on either.
