I don't need a scale to guess which would be heavier.

A larger male would be heavier than a petite female.. or a child.. lol

I mean, I can only get rid of one person, but would it really make sense to throw overboard a child who barely weighs anything? What difference would that really make if it's sinking? And if I could throw something overboard that barely weighed anything (as a child), then why not get rid of all of our shoes.. they add up in weight. Then we can just sit on our feet to keep them warm until we're saved.

throws the gender thing off a bit but remains significant.
