In conversation with a friend from another forum. I wa saying that locally, the men are fairly polite, but it is not often that they treat you as a gentleman should, opening doors, letting you go first, that sort of thing.
I am all for equality, but I do miss it. What's your part of the world like for that?

I agree with Heather. If I get to a store first, but someone is close behind, I always hold the door open for them. I always do that, but especially for the elderly or those that are handicapped. In this case, it's not so much gender related, but common courtesy.
Yes, everyone become aware about how to politely get the door for everyone :-) And don't forget to smile or say thank you when someone does the same for you.
Interestingly I did a paper on this type of thing in Uni. So part of my data was to watch people going into various places (stores, restaurants) one odd anomaly I found, in groups of people who seemed to know and not know each other, it was almost always the tallest person in the group that held the door open. I thought that was kind of interesting.

See, now I have an excuse to never open a door for anyone, apart from Priss.

i wont lie and say i always let people go first, or hold doors open etc. people around my area are so rude, i hate to say it without sounding rude myself, but in my hometown there are more foreigners than there are white british, and i always find the foreigners to be the worst, not all of them, we have a mixture, asians, few chinese, polish, slovakian, romanian, spanish etc. i find Romanians and Spanish (brings me to another thing, i didnt realise some Spanish people were black..) are the most polite, the asians around here think they own the place, please come here for 2 days and you will see im not being rude myself, they walk in front of you, stop in front of you, dont move when you ask, they spit in front of you, blow smoke in your face (or your 1 year old face!!!) and they never use manners. the other day i had to stop bcos a woman was in my way, another woman looked right at me and sai 'well come on then you only have little legs' so i told her 'i can only go as fast as the person in front of me, and it seems the woman in front didnt hear me say excuse me 10 times!' yes i did raise my voice mid sentence, she still didnt move though, i ended up walking onto the road (without M)
i was in a que before at a shop, i had a basket with a few items a asian bloke came right in front of me and said 'i only have bread' oh well im sorry, i dont care if you only have bread or if you have 10 loaves of bread, i was first and manners dont cost, i would have let him go if id of seen, but he just barged in, until the lady at the till told him to shift it!!
my OH is quite polite actually, he holds doors, lets people past, says his p's and q's and talks with manner when needed.
When life hands you lemons, make grape juice then sit back and watch as the world wonders how you did it.
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait ‘til tomorrow For babies grow up we've learnt to our sorrow, So quiet down cobwebs Dust go to sleep I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep
During one of my recent vacations, I was inside a staircase for a lighthouse (which is very cramped!), and there are these platforms you are supposed to stop and wait on if people are trying to go up/down (whoever is near them has to stop to let some pass, take turns).. well... there were people traveling from china who were just trying to shove themselves up passed a whole line of us making our way down, making us have to grip onto the railings. It was dangerous! They had on giant backpacks, too, which made us have even less room.
It's pretty obvious what the platforms are for, even if you have never been inside one.. I had never been in one, but I could see what they were for. Some people just do not use their brains and only think of themselves.. always in a rush, and not caring who they have to push/shove to get to where they are going. Rude..

I'll go back to what Callie had said about people being rude. And when she mentioned that the Spanish-speaking people were polite, I totally agree! I've worked with people that spoke Spanish and they were so nice. Yesterday, I walked down my street and saw a guy fixing the side-walk, and guessing that he was Latino, I said Hola to him. He gave me a big smile and said Hola! We can't control the behavior of people, but rather, appreciate the nice ones.
As a minority with people pretending they don't speak English, I find it a minor insult.
To have 5th generation Cubans that speak no English, and at one time tried to make Spanish the official language of Miami, I don't find them so friendly.
So corrupt was the Miami government, it has been unchartered and absorbed into the county, now known as Miami/Dade.
You may as well compare Miami as Little Greece since they completely bankrupted the city, and ignored legalities.
Awarding a deserving person a "Kilo to the City" was the standard joke via Al Pacino.

Mana is my favourite band and Alex Gonzalez (the drummer) is the one that I like the most. He was born in Miami, although his parents were from Cuba. Sorry Shell, but I disagree with you on this one. At my former job I was friends with every Latina there! They may have been from different Spanish-speaking countries, but they were always nice to me. They spoke English fluently, but I loved hearing them speak in their native tongue with one another!

Friendly "not"!
Yes, we get that in Wales too. They pretend they cannot understand english. I wouldn't mind but myself and most scots are of celtic origin, as are the welsh and irish. So I am not even english!
What is particularly infuriating is when they work in the tourist industry. Then they are taking my money and being rude about it!
