its currently hiding under my shed. i have a rat trap but its not fooled.. it did look like it was beginning to get food from the trap but someone came into my garden and now its hiding under my shed, we put chicken on the trap over night, the next morning the chicken was gone but the trap hasnt snapped down, then we put a bit of raw beef on it, the rat came out once all day, my OH came home and said it was at one end of the garden and when he opened the gate it hid back under the shed last ngiht we put raw beef on the trap, again this morning the food is gone but the trap hasnt snapped. this morning i have put some choc cereal i the little middle bit in the hopes it comes out again and is fooled this time.. its annoyed me bcos on saturday it was out scurrying my garden in the middle of the day, having the time of its life, now it wont come out at all!!!
anyone any ideas?

okay so my OH just phoned me and said the rat finally got trapped, but it rolled its way out of it and escaped. what are the chances of it going for it again? or are rats smarter than we think and wont fall for it again??

funny that cher thats what i was singing when i saw it hahah!!
whats a ineffectual trap? means its crap basically? its a rentokill one, cost me a tenner, its a spring one too which ive heard are good. it does have 2 holes in the back which i assume you use to fasten it down, maybe thats why it got out bcos it rolled and when it did that it came off.
i dont want to send a dog in bcos it looks really scruffy, im yet to see a un-scruffy one but this looks like its been in the wars. it didnt come out at all last night, or so the chocolate was still on the trap, maybe it has died?? i think im going to call a pest control for advice. im not getting anyone out bcos i refuse to pay for it and my landlord wont bcos its not in my house -.-

Yeh, if you are going to have rats, they could at least be smart looking, fur all brushed back, whiskers twitching, and their noses wrinkled but not overly so.
The trap is supposed to kill them by breaking their spine.
I used to live between two farms and we always had them, every so often I called in the council and that was free for their rat catcher.
We had pet rabbits in one of our barns and they were over run with mice. I bought about 10 traps and every day for ages, I was clearing them out. Once there was actually three mice in one little trap. That was horrible.
Then once my ex bought poisoned wheat one year, that halved our bird population. I told him, but he was a narcissist.
and them tails, eww they are gross, i thought the trap would do that too but i didnt know how instant or if it could have escaped then still die, i keep throwing water under the shed (it is raised) hoping it would run out, although id be terrified, id know if its alive or not

Pssst.... don't tell anyone but I am almost rat phobic. Id play in a tub full of snakes and spiders before going anywhere near a rat.... REALLY makes me uncomfortable. Which is odd as I had a few white mice as pets as a child and loved them. Put me near a rat tho.... WATCH OUT!

I saw the movie "Willard" and loved it Cher! Auttie: You know that I love spiders! Callie: Just purchase some mice because for some reason, rats will stay away if mice are there. Well, that would be a lesser evil.

So, you're saying that comment is right out? Friends have told me that rats don't want to be around mice. It doesn't sound logical, but water bugs are much bigger than spiders; yet when my spider, Boris was here, the water bugs disappeared. Of course, I don't claim to be a ratologist.

Use Slim Jim sausage.
Rat will NOT get it without tripping the trap.
And, it will last for months without turning rancid.
i contacted a pest control guy and asked him for advice since i wont know if its dead or hising unless i lift the shed up, which i absolutley dont want to do. he said it could well be dead, it could also well be hiding, they are smart things for such gross creatures (his words) or it simply could have left, he said to keep putting bait down and see if anything goes, which it hasnt, my OH is going to empty the shed and try lift or move it to see if its there and if no whether or not its alive. thanks for suggestions, ive never heard of slim jim sausages but ill try something like it, if it is still alive

I have a new spider! This guy is larger and gray in colour. I checked out some photos on-line and I think that he may be a "Crab-Spider". I saw him in his web today, taking care of a little bug. I named him Dude.
