Diversity is creativity and as long as the participants are interested in the rhetoric and the subject matter is informative and entertaining, why should it matter where and how the thread direction goes?
The thread title will always bring the conversation back to its beginning!
I brought this out of the All Things Politics thread, as I think it needs a frank look, and because I didn't think it was a political topic in these circumstances.
Broadly speaking I do agree with you, and that is why I believe I am fair in describing our modding as being "light".
Most of the threads on here wander off at a tangent, and are left alone by the mods, as it is all about having some fun.
Off the top of my head, the only modding that has been done, discounting any who have been banned, is the political thread, personal threads, and any unnecessary sexual innuendo.
In reverse order A debate on deleting sexual innuendo was had a while back, and it was agreed, mostly by omission, that we had got it about right. On the personal threads, it seems inappropriate to wander off topic, when someone is covering personal and delicate topics.
The political thread is one we built to try and minimise lots of little political threads popping up and taking over, so far it has worked just fine.
Those are my opinions, they may, or may not, altogether reflect Heather's, but I am sure she, like I, would be happy for further debate.
It is meant to be a forum, in which everyone has a say, so please contradict if you wish.

Actually, I have been a member of a busy forum in the past, it ran great for about 8 years. Then slowly over a period of about 12 months, the forum lost the direction it had been in, and most of the threads became utterly banal with little direction.
The main offenders were all very nice people actually, and individually, I was rather fond of most of them, but the forums just lost their point, and most of us regulars just wandered off.
I still wander in, but I rarely post.
I am actually still looking for decent forums. In fact, I am about to leave another, it has got dull, and just one big yawn.

We do allow off topic to a certain extent, but when people come back to the thread and continue the off topic discussion, then that is when we have an issue =p I prefer new threads be started if we are all able to discuss the topic to the point of derailing a current one for an extended period. If anything it's more for organization and making it easier to find discussions based on the topic. With that said, I trust everyone here to get back to the topics on their own a majority of the time; I rarely have to get us back on topic.
As Cher mentioned, we definitely will remove off topic conversations taking place in personal threads; for example, it may be viewed as rude to hold a random conversation in someone's "diary", you know? We usually clean that up once the conversation is over or move it elsewhere.
Even the moderators are guilty of going off topic, so we do "clean up" our own posts as well.
