We all know that modern music started in the 50's but it was really the 60's and the 70's when it became an art form.
We all know there were some big bands then and many survived through to today like the Stones, or the Beatles.
But others were just as important, and maybe we can look at some of those here.
I mentioned Melanie last week. In the 60's Dylan was big, and he brought folk music into pop culture. He was not alone though. This is Melanie, and Brand New Key. Of course the lyrics are VERY 60's lol

Her music was very clean and almost childlike.
I don't know for sure, but she sounds like she's using the same tune as combine harvester by the wurzels

The very same. The Wurzels adapted it a few years after Melanie made it.
I wonder how she felt when the comedy version got to number one, where she didn't. She just got to number four.
I also found this:
Melanie has acknowledged the possibility of detecting sexual innuendo in the lyrics, but has denied any deeper meaning:
[The song], "Brand New Key", I wrote in about fifteen minutes one night. I thought it was cute; a kind of old thirties tune. I guess a key and a lock have always been Freudian symbols, and pretty obvious ones at that. There was no deep serious expression behind the song, but people read things into it. They made up incredible stories as to what the lyrics said and what the song meant. In some places, it was even banned from the radio. My idea about songs is that once you write them, you have very little say in their life afterward. It's a lot like having a baby. You conceive a song, deliver it, and then give it as good a start as you can. After that, it's on its own. People will take it any way they want to take it.
According to Recording Industry Association of America, King has sold 19.6 million records in the United States. She is also recognized as the most successful female songwriter of the 20th century, having written or co-written 118 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

Staying in america. We have this band from the sixties, that started a whole new 'wholesome' look to the genre for rock and roll. To say nothing of their amazing harmonies.
OK, I've been a bit dark for a few days...but I love music, some anyway but not the Beach Boys all that much.
Alabama's "(Dancin) Shaggin on the boulevard" is, for me, classic beach music.
Most any R&B works too.
The "ugh" was bad form, even for me.
Pffft, the beach boys are better, and they came first. If it wasn't for the beach boys the Alabama band would not be playing beach sounds. Which is the whole point of this thread.

I like all sorts of music and sometimes you forget just how groundbreaking or good it is.
I like to watch first reaction videos One is of The righteous Brothers singing unchained Melody. As the lights go up and reveal his face the majority of listeners are quite stunned it's great to watch.
I've also seen some very good reactions to Bohemian Rhapsody..

I grew up on music made in the 50's and onward. Dad was born in '44 and Mum in '50, so it makes sense that the older stuff would be playing in our house. I like Roy Orbison and Buddly Holly a bunch, and the early Beatles tracks. Plus Beach Boys. And then ABBA and Boney M... I heard lots of country music, so there's nostalgia when I hear some of it now, but I've always been more comfortable with pop and rock. I didn't hear much Queen until the late 80's when a friend introduced me, but I fell for it then!
