Yesterday I think I upset a squirrel as I was walking through our churchyard. I think I caught it by surprise and, when it had run a little up the nearest tree, it sat on a nestbox and squawked at me. Nornally they are silent but this one was so noisy another woman who came up the path thought it was the muntjac deer she had just seen.

The squirrels around here can be quite loud when you scare them. I call it tripping the squirrel alarm.

I saved a bug's life yesterday: it was an innocent woodlouse and hadn't done anything wrong. It seemed happy to just wander around, so I put him outside.

Whatever they're called, I'd rather they stay outside!
Yes, and no.
They like it damp, and it could be a sign that your home is damp. Hopefully, it has just come in on your shoe or similar, and is not indicative of any damp problem.

They seem to be associated with rotting wood too, although that is often damp.

If I had a garden, I would have a bug hotel: they are great at having life thrive in the garden. I certainly don't mind bugs when they're outside. In fact, I rather like some bugs. Still, not in my home. They can have their own home in anyone's garden. At least there is food for them outside.
We had a fantastic show above the back garden last night. It was just getting dark the bats were flitting about then 4 long eared owls came flying in. They circled the trees and swooped down across the garden just above our heads . If i had reached up Im almost sure I could have touched them.

You can have them on the window-sill. I have seen hotels that are glass on the inside, and they stick to the window glass, so you can watch them.

Ive never seen such bold behaviour from owls.
It went on for over 30 minutes. It was amazing ..
I love nature and wildlife. What a show you saw! Did you film it on your smart phone?

But the deer are rutting now, the males are full of adrenaline and testosterone they weigh 100kg or ore and can run at 30KPH so if you collide with one its like being hit by a motorbike. Because of the rut they wont back down or run away if challenged or if you get between them and their hareem .Yet despite the fact that there are signs telling people to keep their dog on lead we saw loose running dogs in the woods today.
No excuses, if the park/forestry commission say ON lead then obey the rules. No matter how well trained fido is !

Great picture Cassie. I know about the rut well especially up in New Hampshire when the moose went into it. Best to stay far away. In fact they have been known to go after a car or two.

I got a dent in the front of my car when I hit a pheasant, and they are a lot smaller.

I've had to replace a number plate before due to a pheasant.

Nice photos! Our deer, elk and antelope are rutting as well.

I think about driving around at night these days with so many deer about although not which would likely cause that amount of damage here, at least this far south, thankfully. I did have a deer run out from the undergrowth one day when at work though. It appeared from nowhere but luckily for it it ran across the road through moving traffic and everything missed it.
My stepson had less luck one night, years ago, when he was out on his motorcycle. He hit a little one but luckily only a glancing blow which removed an indicator. I'm not sure if the deer survived but it may have been lucky too.

Thats scary. I never thought about a motorcycle hitting a deer. A direct hit would be a no win situation for the driver as well as the deer.
