1. The Best Friend and The Ex Husband

My close friend has an ex husband and a child. However, that child was adopted into another family for reasons I can't go into online. I always knew her ex husband: even before they got married. I bumped into the ex husband at a night club a few months ago. He gave me his number/I gave him my number: just to be friendly and form a friendship.

So I telephone him a few nights ago - just to say hello - he tells me he has always fancied me: even before marrying my close friend. And that he wants to take our friendship further.

NO WAY. My close friend would have a fit and never talk to me again if she thought I'd slept with her ex-husband: the father of her child. I won't betray my close friend for some quick sexual encounter.

2. The Other Best Friend And The Police

My other close friend was arrested AGAIN. This time her mum claimed she hit her. My friend fought the police. Then a few nights later, I get a telephone call from her at 2 in the morning: she has run away. So she gets a taxi to my apartment. She stays the night, where 4 big policeman turn up at 3am to check on her. I had 4 bloody policemen in my apartment because of my friend. What must the neighbours think? They go, I go back to sleep. She also talks to the staff where she lives on the phone because they want to check on her, too. I talk to them, tell them my friend needs their help & support, rather than judgement.

The next day in the afternoon, she gets the bus back home.

I honestly am not making any of this up. This all happened last week. And I don't want her doing it again.

But that's the way the world is, James: if you don't look like you deserve that desk, you're not going to get that desk.

1. I suppose he never imagined you would just want simple friendship. I've sometimes wondered if single guys ever understand that girls could just want to be friends, nothing more. Oy! At least he could have waited a while longer before attempting to take things to another level.

2. I don't think it matters so much what the neighbours think, but your friend should always go back to where she lives and you could visit there when she needs your support. That would likely be much better for all involved.

1. All the guy wants is a one-night stand. I won't be used like that: and I certainly won't betray my best friend by sleeping with her ex-husband. She'd simply never trust me again.

2. If only I could visit her. There's nothing really stopping me, but I haven't been to her place at all. Except for when she was dropped off home after a night out at a nightclub. She hasn't invited me over, either.

She really has to pull up her socks here when it comes to the police: she has to start actually protecting herself, rather than provoking other people. She is shooting herself in the foot, over and over.

I shall minimize contact with him. He obviously has gotten the wrong idea and wants more than friendship.

I won't avoid him as such: but I will only call him occasionally.

The second best friend claims to have been assaulted.

She telephoned me last night to say the above. She said she was sitting in the pub with three women drinking coca-cola. She then said she wanted me to pay for a taxi to take her to my apartment: because she was too scared to go to her own apartment.

She was not happy with my response. I told her:

1. There was nothing I could do
2. She'd simply have to return home after stopping off at mine
3. She needed to go home and face the music
4. That she was safe behind her apartment locked front door

What I did do was telephone Social Services Out-of-hours. I told them my friend had claimed to be assaulted and needed their help. I asked them if they could take her home: and just make her feel safer when returning to her apartment. I really told her she was not to come to my place: that she had to deal with the situation herself. She said to me nastily: "you're a really helpful friend, aren't you." That line took any sympathy I had.

She has now telephoned me over 20 times - including in the night - and I have not answered.

Why am I to blame? She is the person who wouldn't return to a perfectly safe and good apartment. What did she think? That the staff would open her front door and beat her up? She KNOWS that wouldn't happen. I certainly have nothing to feel guilty about. My apartment isn't a hotel, either.

But that's the way the world is, James: if you don't look like you deserve that desk, you're not going to get that desk.

My friend apologised for what she said to me.

However, she phoned at 2am, so I used my phone skills to block her number: just for a short while, though! It was the only way to stay asleep. I shall just communuicate on my smart phone with her now. I know blocking her number seems mean, but she has been obsessively telephoning me. Now I retain control and won't be hassled.

All this makes me seem horrible, but when you're called every 5 minutes by the same person, you'd do the same.

Setting limits is not horrible, unless you're the recipient and you despise other people even having limits... Unfortunately, that can happen.

Stick to it and the friendship can become healthier, if she's willing.

The guy has a record you called him, that's damaging enough. He could show it to his ex, your friend, that's as damaging as if you had any intention when you called even though you did not have any. Your friend will always have the question " why did she call him?"

The second scenario, friend or not, if they have no consideration for you, just stay away, no one needs that kind of friend.

I told my friend about me phoning her ex-husband: that it was just a catch-up. Thankfully my friend understood and realizes nothing is - or will - be going on. My friend knows I wouldn't betray her like that.

As for the second friend: I feel relieved to have blocked her number. Of course, I shall have to explain myself to her, but calling more than once or twice a day is obsessive and I don't like it. Still, my friend is important to me and I will try to be there for her. I just can't be there at two in the morning.

But that's the way the world is, James: if you don't look like you deserve that desk, you're not going to get that desk.
