it is still dangerously cold here. because of the temps here being so bad for the past week now, it's dragging on the electrical tower or whatever you call it. so for the first time in my lifetime...rather than wait for a full blown power outage they began rolling blackouts here today. they will create a full blackout for individual grids/neighborhoods for 30-60 at a time over the next couple days. i have no specifics if it's for once a day or what time of day. they have asked us to unplug appliances we're not using and turn off lights we don't need and turn the heat down to 65-68. it's 30 effing below. i'm gone all day. there's no way i'm freezing my tits off all night. everything else is off 74 is the best i can do because it is so cold here.
several of us can't start our cars and have had to call and request rides to work. it's awful.
Marci, do you have any idea where you get most of your electricity from? (oil, wond, ?) I am hearing that a lot of the pronlem in some areas is because the wind turbines just don't work in really cold weather. When I lived ion New Hampshire it was always below 0 and we never had that problem. Just curious.
i'm sure some dumbass probably thought wind was a good idea to save money for kansas. anyway, i don't know. here's a link. best i can do.

Wind turbines work in Antarctic, Canada, and Alaska just fine. They are really cold in those places!

Just curious as to why they have stopped working in Texas? Maybe made to different standards because the normal weather isn't anywhere as cold as it has been there?

Not different standards exactly, just they were not prepared for winter. All of their energy sources failed pretty much, and natural gas was the still the main culprit. People are trying to make people anti green energy by placing the blame solely on wind energy is all, but this is a Texas energy problem of their own doing lol

I saw that on the news today. They have their own independent grid so they don't have to deal with any regulations from the federal government. It looks like it came back to haunt them.

Definitely! And they think people are happy about this "independence," I don't know about that after what happened.

Exactly Heather. The Texas way came back to haunt them in this case.
Snowdrops coming up , storks on nests , birds chattering, sun shining... Good walking weather.
That sounds great. Our snowdrops are starting to fade now.
I have nevr seen a stork in the wild, must be something.........
They are quite majestic... Im on the lookout for the cranes. They are coming into the country in large groups.. Id love to see them . But my favourite is the spoonbill...
Where I live it is a bird watchers paradise. I see stocks everyday and spoonbills at least once a week.
Im surprised we see spoonbills this far North but they seem to like it here and come to nest every summer. The storks are century old summer visitors although some have chosen to stay here as residents. The cranes are migrants and the egrets are here all the time now even though offical sources say otherwise..last year we even had flamingos !

Flamingos, that is really something. I have never seen any in the wild.
We are doing well here too. We have sunshine and 12.5c Our bluebell bulbs are just starting to push through. They are my favourite. We have one crocus blooming, and the rest and the daffs are not far behind.
