Futurist and inventor Ray Kurzweil believes humanity is on the cusp of achieving immortality. He foresees technology enabling those reaching the end of "natural" life to upload the contents of their minds then transfer that data to an avatar of some kind (physical and/or virtual), a bit like something from Star Trek.
My questions pertaining to this subject are:
1) Would you be interested in having the contents of your mind preserved in such a fashion?
2) Would you consider this data preservation to be "immortality" for a human being?
No. I think what makes life precious is the fact that it is short and measurable. Our views and memories would quickly become outdated and subject to censure or ridicule.
I prefer the idea that we are immortal as long as we live in the memory of others. Its not a new teaching the ancient Egyptians believed that only when o your name is erased from all writing and removed from people’s memories do you truly die.
Instead of selfishly uploading oursleves in some virtual way why not work to make our memories live on in others do good now to be remembered later.

A good programme that explores such concepts is Red Dwarf: there are so many scientific principles and theories about space travel, time travel, the quantum world... Science fiction also explores these concepts.
It is a fascinating subject and one with many theories, principles and ideas. The technology of the future is in our grasp today and the human race is vastly progressing forward. I truly believe - just as we have airplanes - that regular people will go into space. And NASA will make it happen. And IS making it happen.
I enjoyed both Hitchhiker's (any version) and Red Dwarf. Haven't seen either for a while, so I'm not sure if my tastes would have changed. But anyway, I'd recommend trying them both. (And I'll see if I can get any Douglas Adams to read for Friday, his birthday.)
It's amazing what kind of things might be ahead for scientific advances, and the options we could have. My oldest keeps grabbing a library book called The Future of Humanity by Dr. Michio Kaku, so I can rely on him to keep me up to date!

Many things thought impossible years ago are now possible and actually occuring.
The more we learn through science, the more we can apply scientific principles to technology. Once it is learnt, scientists and engineers will build and develop the future world. And we are well on our way to a fantastic world.

I am impressed at your optimism.
So am I. So far the technology has only really appeared to have accelerated the burning up of the world at present.
Nothing was ever made better by being miserable about it!
I am always motivated to do more when I first become miserable, so in a way, it makes things better in the end because it forces me to change my situation
