So, I actually wanted to ask about those robots that can help you clean and mop the floor, but I thought why not have a thread to discuss all the smart appliances if we want to?
I'll start with my original question: I've been thinking of getting my mom one of those round robots that can sweep, mop, and/or vacuum clean the floor. They can even be programmed to do that at a certain time every day! Sounds so neat. Some decent ones are priced at USD200 minimum, but I also find ones that are only around USD20 lol. I'm just not sure if it's worth the money. Do you ladies have some experience with this stuff?

In my experience, when it comes to appliances/electronics, you get what you pay for. I don't mean that you have to buy the most expensive, but I'd be suspicious of any product advertised at a tenth of what they usually cost.
How do they deal with the areas underneath chairs? The places where pet hair tends to gather and dust bunnies hide? How do they get round the leg of a table or a diningchair?
No thanks to robot hoovers... Plus of course with all seen the videos of when the dog does a whoopsie and the robot runs over it...

No smart vacuums for me. I can see that being helpful with age, though.
As for the smart things I have....
I have a smart thermostat (Ecobee). I have a Ring doorbell (bugs love to crawl on it). I have Abode for security, but we can also use it to turn on and off lights (or other items plugged into certain adapters) from our phone lol it's pretty cool.

What does a smart thermostat do?
You can use your phone for them. You can program it to switch to certain temperatures based on different factors. We have these room sensors, and we can make it focus on the rooms we are in most of the day as the way to gauge the temps for the floor we're on. So, downstairs, the main focus is our office, as it gets the warmest, and we are in there a majority of the day.
It's automated well, so we hardly have to change it ourselves unless we randomly feel hotter or colder (which is only once in a while), then we set it to a different temperature for 2 hours or so and let it switch back to what it was doing beforehand.

I agree with this.
If a seller/supplier was that desperate to get rid of an item and put it at a very low price, I'd wonder what the catch was. Because if it is too good to be true... It's too good to be true.
We pretty much are surrounded by high tech gadgets. I am happy with what I have but my husband always wants the latest and greatest.
It's always a funny balance with me, being so technically minded. I do like to get away from it all so I liked being old fashioned and doing things by hand. Here we mostly have what you would call more essential technology such as washing machine, microwave etc but have no incentive to get say a robot cleaner, for instance. Working in technology and my skills, aptitude etc means computers and being online as well as other equipment but I do like to escape totally, sometimes dreaming of it.

I love technology. Technology makes life so much easier in many ways. I especially love my computer: it is an extension of my soul. I also love cars: I am always in the car, going here, there and everywhere! Being able to be efficient is vital in the world. WE wouldn't go back to horses and carts, would we? We wouldn't wash all our laundry by hand, either. And we certainly wouldn't we able to live without other technology. Some people undervalue our privileges in the 21st century. Anyone born in previous centuries had it much harder than us.

I know what you mean but it is perhaps really a matter of perspective. We do have a better standard of living with increased life expectancy but I just think the problems change. A point I should make is that all these little items of technology that make our lives easier (in theory) require hard work from a lot of people to design, develop and market them. I think technology breeds technology in ever increasing complexity. It generally means ever increasing pollution too.

Interestingly, with the reduction in graft that you have mentioned over these passing years, there has risen out of proportion, a much higher incidence of mental health problems.
It has been mooted as a response, that people were too tired to notice mental health irregularities, as they were simply worn out, and heading for bed to get much needed sleep in time for the following days graft.
I have no idea. I came across it when I was browsing Bissell's site for cleaning solution, and I remembered Annie's posting that she would be interested in something like that.

There used to be a tv prog over here in the uk called "Tomorrow's World" It showed new inventions. I am surprised there is not a modern version of it.
