Hey girls, our family wants to buy a used car for my sister. It will be a surprise for her
We've narrowed it down to two cars - Range Rover Evoque Convertible and Range Rover Velar. The used ones do not cost an arm and a leg anymore and we want to treat her; long story short she deserves a bit of pampering and good luck after all she's been through in her life...
My sister's kids are all grown up and in University so the car is just for her. I'm keeping information about her as minimal as possible because I want to know your personal preference. It doesn't matter who my sister is or what she does, please tell me which of the two cars is more desirable to you personally
EDIT: Answer with your heart, not with your head please

I am not sure where you are located but in the US, maintaining European cars can be very expensive so you and your family should find out if your sister can afford that first.
If she can, considering her age ( children in college), I would go for a non-convertible. I know it's not as fun, but the long-term upkeep will be much easier.
It's hard to choose between a convertible and non-convertible for someone without knowing about them, honestly lol not everyone likes convertibles. But because you want to pamper her, then maybe a convertible so she can feel the sun on her face more and the wind in her hair to have a good time, if she's into that. That comes from my heart and brain
I forgot to mention, don't include your head in your answers only your heart
If the question is serious, it deserves a thoughtful answer. Being thoughtful also means being practical. Sorry for being blunt, I also have an European background
If you're in Southern Europe convertible make sense if you're in northern Europe for the few sunny days we have in the summer it's lovely..but you know those winter's are dreadful and convertibles are damp and smelly. I dont care how much they cost they always smell damp. Plus a hardtop is less likely to get broken into to and of course it is safer in a crash.
Having said all of that I hate the new range rovers with a passion. They are flash and showy they are expensive, those big engines drink fuel like alcoholics, they are difficult to maintain, so unless your sister has a big wad of cash to keep this thing going and pay for any spares or services it might need choose something else.

I think this is a good answer Cassie, I don't hate them but they would not be a car of my choice.
If I were given it my heart would say then trade it in for a nice sporty little car. My head would say trade it in for a hybrid. Range Rovers are Ok but I think they belong more on the farm than the road. No, although I am not much bothered by cars I still, at times, do yearn for the open road in a little sporty car.
In a decision between the two though I would have to say hardtop.
I remebered now what it was that bugged me . A friend had one a sensor in the gearbox went and he needed it replaced but these are units supposed to be sealed for life so to get to it and flush the system ect was a devils job..It cost him £5,000

That sounds nasty. I have heard of such things happening though. Someone else who I came across had a similar issue with a Fiat. Although he loved the car he had to cut his losses and change as the bill to sort it would be so great. I understand that now, because of all the issues with pollution and zones in London, there are problems with some cars and, unless you have something recent, it is almost better to get something pretty ancient to avoid big charges.I think some of them are exempt but it may be classic cars (welcome back the Ford Escort lol). A neighbour had a sticky problem with a Mercedes she bought recently and it took them a week or two to sort it but at least it showed itself under warrenty.
Over here the UK model was a very popular car with big sales. It was actually the car I passed my driving test in and my father had one too so my early driving was in one. I mentioned that because it was a good basic reliable car which has none of the modern electronics and is probably old enough to be 'vintage' and exempt from many of the current regulations so a good model would still be cheap motoring without much of the hassle.

The American models suck but they're cheaper than some. I was looking and I put $21 in gas in the first month I had it because it was near empty when I got it. Sat. is the second month I've had it. I put $15 in. Not bad compared to double that with the van.

I'd go for neither car: the range rover is big and bulky and really for the countryside and farmers and the whatnot. The convertible isn't appropriate for autumn or winter. I also don't believe a convertible is practical enough. It looks great on a sunny day, but other than that: no.
I'd go for an electric car. It would have a roof and be a sensible - yet attractive - colour. Perhaps a darker blue? It would have all the safety features, too. I think it should also be a five door and have a sunroof. You want a medium sized car, too. I would go for a major brand of car.
You should buy petrol over here at £1.32 for a single litre!!
Cherry, one gallon of gas is CA cost $4.5 which is about $3.75 Euro 1 gallon = 3.79 litre are you saying 1 gallon of gas cost 1.32 x 3.79=5 euro = approx $USD 6?

Is this normal?
Lol you should try living here... Ever wondered why some European countries like those teeny tiny cars?
We pay around $8 a gallon of petrol. Then theres road tax..
Each fuel type there is a different charge, electic cars pay least diesel most. But a petrol car weighing 1150-1250KG will cost $728 per year diesel $1,503 a bigger car say the range rover in the OPs post would cost petrol $1,753 and diesel an eyewatering $3,105 per year just for the tax!
