I'm a little nervous this evening. Not sure how well I will sleep. As I was taking the trash out from the ambulance garage at work there was a needle in the bottom of the bag sticking out. I got stuck by it. They had to call the house supervisor and she came down with an incident report and I was escorted to the lab to get my blood drawn. I had to be tested for HIV & Hep B & C. I have looked up the symptoms of the Heps and of C-diff since it was in with the nasty ambulance trash. I'm a little worried. The only good news is the fact that they said it looked like it had been used to draw what appeared to be fentanyl (medically safe kind) in the syringe. They said it was probably used in the IV port. They didn't see any visible blood on it. The employee health nurse is supposed to call me with results tomorrow. I don't know if the HIV test takes longer or not. So I'm gonna go eat dinner and pray that I don't have something creepy. I also emailed the Employee Health director as she is in charge of infection control. I asked her if we could get a permanent sign out in the ambulance garage telling them to not put sharps in the trash and perhaps a sharps box next to said sign.

There will be a formal procedure over disposal that they should have followed. Their manager will get his butt kicked, and have to kick butt himself, and probably add something to the procedure to tighten up.
This is not a little problem, this is a big deal, and is a serious breach of H&S. It will certainly end up at senior management level.

I'm sure there will but... there will always be some dumb ass that will continue to throw needles in the trash because they don't give a sh*t. That's the part that p*sses me off. I received a call from employee health this morning. The bloodwork I had done last night was to make sure the HIV, HBV & HCV aren't already in my system. I now have to undergo the Hepatitis B vax series for the next 6 months. One today, one in 3 months and one in 6 months provided I don't have an allergic reaction. I will also be given an immunoglobulin something shot to boost my immunity to help protect me now. And I'm positive I need a tetanus vax as well. For the next 6 months I have to also get bloodwork to monitor in case any of this shows up in my system. I also hafta self monitor for symptoms of those plus I plan to watch for symptoms of c-diff just in case. These people know better but they don't care. Now I hafta spend the next 6 months with yet another worry on top of all the crap I already have on my shoulders. I am sad that people are such low lives that they can't follow simple safety procedures to ensure that this crap doesn't happen to other people. They're responsible for the safe handling of these items. And yet here I am...
The more people complain, the more likely that anyone messing about will be sacked.
If you really want something doing, start looking in the bags, and report any you spot.
i always do but i think i'm gonna start turning it in to the safety officers every time i see one. today i wrote a note on their communication board that read "Absolutely No SHARPS In Any of the Trash Containers Please & Thank you." I wanted to write didn't appreciate the needle stick but that would get me in trouble.
This morning my tetanus shot shoulder hurts but not too bad. I was pretty miserable last night with both of those vaccines rockin n rollin in my system. I was too exhausted to even finish my supper last night. I was in bed by 2. Slept 9 hrs. Might have slept longer if my nose wouldn't have gotten stuffy. One of the nurse aids at work that is a friend of mine said she got stuck by the needle of a known addict and was fine and she said she would pray for me so that makes me feel a touch better. However, the odds of getting Hep B from a needle if you're not vaccinated are 1 in 3 people. The infection can live on dried blood up to two weeks. I am mostly worried about that right now. The first vax is supposed to off 80% protection. I am hoping that the fact that it was just a knick will be in my favor. It wasn't in there long so maybe by the grace of God I'll be alright.

Incredibly thirsty. I've been drinking sparkling water after sparkling water - with no need to pee - and I am still thirsty. I haven't even been sweating much.

If it's going in either you are swelling up or it's coming out somewhere. Physics says so
