From about the start of 2021 I got into the habit of sending my friends good old fashioned letters and cards: not just for birthdays or special events, but also for their entertainment and to just cheer them up. When I write a letter I always include fun stickers that make the letter/card pop.
I do this because I really enjoy sending letters and cards through the post. Emails and texts are great: but they're not personal and have no nostalgia attached to them. I think snail mail does cheer up my friends. I do wish, though, they'd reciprocate. I don't just write to them for some kind of reward, but I do wish they would acknowledge my efforts more.
Anyhow, if you're wanting to be creative and cheer up your friends, why not do the same? Amazon sell stickers. I bought myself several sets of stickers from them: and they are rather cool.
I have to say I hardly write any letters now days everyone is on FB so they see everything as it happens..
I do like to send cards but thats awful expensive, to send a card to my son in Ireland was €2,75 for the card which was standard and pretty dull and another €2,50 to send it.
So using an Irish website I designed and sent a card with a photo that I had taken and a verse I had written inside it. The cost of the card was €2,50 but the cost of postage was less than €1 so he got a really unique and personal card and it cost me less and was delivered quicker than a standard card.
I like to make my own photo cards at Christmas too and often make a slideshow to music featuring some of the highlights from our year.I send these to realtives not on FB or in far off places. Its nothing fancy but its better than yet another bit of paper that has to be recycled after the new year.
I agree on the creative thing though , there are so many options nowdays why stick with boring white paper and blue ink?
Well considering the fact that my friends no longer acknowledge my existence and they would never respond I can't see wasting the materials. I'd be better off writing to myself. I used to love to write letters but nobody does that anymore so they just let it go. I'm lucky if they bother to read it.
You know what on the old forum we did a Christmas card exchange. Everyone sent me their home address is and I gave each member who had sent me their address another members address at random each and everyone of us got a surprise Christmas card that year. Maybe if we trust each other enough it's something that one of the Mods could arrange here.
Back in the day that was half the fun. Waiting expectantly for the mail. Me and my friend in NY used to write each other books and it was fun tearing into it and reading about his life. But he fell in love AGAIN and once AGAIN I got cast aside. I thing this time for good. I gave up trying to stay connected once I saw that nobody was responding to me anymore in any form. If they ever need me for something good damn luck to them.
I love to hand paint cards. It's not something that goes with everyone though. One of the main times is with our art group as we do a 'secret santa' for christmas cards.

Receiving a hand painted card is something I would deeply treasure.
I also think it is a shame people don't appreciate getting a card or letter through the post: because the sender must've taken the time and effort to write it. And even to design it, if they did so. I know I put a lot of stickers on my cards and letters. In fact, my good friend - Nick - sent me 4 fabulous magazines to read. He has also said he treasures my letters and cards. Nick HAS reciprocated and I am glad.
That reminds me: I am no longer mad with my friend Vicky for taking out that money from her mum's card. I am actually glad she did. There was an incident with her mum and I won't ever send her mum a card or money again. Vicky was very upset. I cannot say what occured, but needless to say, I don't have any affection for Vicky's mum. Her mum didn't deserve that $5.

We weren't thrilled back in the day, but my mum taught us to write letters to relatives. I'm one of the few who still understands the value of writing and sending something in the mail.
Now where to find the time? I'm hoping I will do so this summer. Already getting ideas for stories, so there's room for creativity in the brain when I'm not narrowing my focus to teaching...
As I mentioned my next door neighbours husband passed away. I feel this is absolutely a time when online greeting or card will just not do you have to make it personal and it has to go by post.
He was a keen fisherman and a few weeks ago I made a lovely dawn picture of one of the fishing piers it was completely empty and the sunrise had gone in a straight line across the lake and just hit the end of the pier I thought it was a beautiful picture and I thought it suited a condolence card very well. So I had this photograph made into a card and inside made a faded version of the same picture as a background and put a nice poem over the top.
I just felt that at this time a personal card was needed.
This does remind me that I have a birthday card to write today. Not a hand painted one but the thought is there.
I buy cards from a local photographer, or get Hallmark ones. Not all of us make our own, and the thought is definitely still there.
I think the message that you write inside a card is as important if not more so than the card that you choose to send, a piece of scrap paper with a heartfelt message on it means more then the most expensive or exquisite of cards.

That is beautiful, cassie. I am, too, sorry for your loss and the loss your next door neighbour has suffered. It is a very sad time.
I have written my friend, Nick, a letter. I have also included a CD. I have written my close friend, Vicky, a card - with a letter-type message in it - and have also included a book I bought her as a present last week. I hope Vicky enjoys both the card AND book.
I have used loads of stickers on each of my friend's letter and card. I am very creative and fun!
I just got four birthday cards ready today for the mail tomorrow, all for relatives with birthdays coming in the next couple weeks. I'm so glad I bought a 12-pack of Hallmark cards. They're really great, especially compared to the cheaper Amazon package from the last purchase (which had typos on some cards). Worth it to send something well-made (and sparkly!) when I can.
