Yes, I have never really considered it. Some of them are more obvious than others though. Pigs usually do appear fat and dogs look lazy as the sprawl on the carpet or sofa. I think that comparing a person to an animal is the main part of the insult and it is just the stereotype of a particular animal which puts together the picture. Like a lot of these sayings though, many of them are somewhat jokey in their intent. Speaking on the current trend toward political correctness though I do fear for the future. 'Newspeak' from '1984' is coming. Most of those, and similar, sayings are still Ok to use but 'fat pig' for one is heavily frowned upon now. On a similar vein though they don't all include animals as 'skinny as a rake' does not.
Well a bull in a china shop .... that would be a disaster..
But yes bird brain springs to mind.. In recent tests with food puzzles scientists showed that the common crow was quicker at solving the puzzle than a chimpanzee. Not so daft after all..
I think through history these comparisons were drawn to illustrate common features for people with very little education or knowledge of the world and they date to pre Roman times.
Which does raise the question, if we are now so much better educated and world wise why do we continue to use these outdated insults?

Well I don't particularly use them but I do like to keep alive old sayings and do use quite a lot of the less offensive ones. There are a good number of others in which different races of people are used in the same way. They would obviously be regarded as racist these days and illegal to be used. It does created difficulties though to preserve history without sanitising it. I think that the insults are just changed over the years. As one becomes non acceptable another just replaces it. Can you take the basic instincts out of the human?

It's strange in the Netherlands there's very little fat pig lazy cow name-calling most name-calling here is to wish someone to be afflicted with a horrible illness... One of the worst is 'go get cancer' There is a historical significance to this other I can't entirely record it at the moment but basically it's something that is 4oo or 500 years old and no you won't get that out of people anytime soon the veneer of civilisation is an extremely thin one that's obvious whenever you see a panic or disaster situation. All civilised behaviour goes out the window and people think only of themselves.

There's always a reason to insult someone in this world. No matter whether an animal term used or not, it isn't right. Admittedly, throwing an insult is therapeutic, but it still isn't right.
Some people certainly like their insults, unfortunately. Still, letting rip does make a person feel better. Because some people ARE a b*tch.
The danger I see is that people will be so resticted having to keep things bottled up that they will explode with temper and do something they will regret and never have wished for.
It's maybe not really and insult but I came across what was described as an old Arab saying yesterday: 'The race is always won by the camel with the longest nose'. It amused me to think of a camel at full stretch lol.

Recently I really lost my temper with some stupid people messing about while I was out shopping with my daughter (she 32 so adult ears only) they were putting themselves and their child in danger and making like diffcult for everyone else ..In the privacy of my car I just let out a gasp of temper and spoke a swear word all of my own making that I cant repeat here,,
But it was so rude and at the same time so ludicrous that my daughter just dissolved into a huge fit of giggles which did break the tension. So youre right sometimes that steam valve needs to blow or else we could just explode.

I'm not down with using animals as a way to express insults or dislike of a person. Both the animal and the person have value and should be treated as such...
Sometimes we make up our own goofy insults, possibly influenced by a video we once saw that questioned why it is that God's name is used for swearing. Like we never hear "Oh Pikachu!" or "Benedict Cumberbatch!" (I think his name lends itself well, actually. Makes me smile to pretend-curse that way.) Oh, I suppose we're also influenced by Shakespeare's crazy insults! Some of those are either just totally laughable, or they're harsh! That's how I get kids interested in Shakespeare, you see...
My favourite invention came from my oldest son, who is interested in computers. He came up with "Babbage's cabbages!" That one is just awesome for a fellow geek!
I am a bit by the big ones but I try to read them. They are like people (or is it people are like them?) with body language and looks in their eyes. Fitting in together is where I see it. That way understanding works and intimidation isn't so much of an issue.

I am an animal person: I love cats, dogs, elephants, tigers, lions, birds and birds of prey... the list includes virtually every animal on this planet.
Nature and wildlife fascinates me: it always has. I love animal documentaries in general. I also love getting up close and personal with animals. I'd love to walk with a tiger: although there would be safety measures taken [like a person walking with something that would quickly stun the tiger if he/she got angry]. I'd also love to walk with elephants [much safer than tigers]. I love feeding lamas and I love riding horses .
This planet is awesome.

This is why I dont agree with any of these interactive trips with wild animals. Sharks /lions/tigers or dolphins. They are not there for our entertainment.
I wont even take baited photos ( where you use some food to attract an animal) and many organisations such as National Georgraphic wont use these types of photo. Nature is wonderful but its even more wonderful when you see the animals free and as they should be.

Exactly Cassie. Seeing them in their natural habitat and being able to capture that moment in a photo is something that I cherish.

Elephants kill far more people than tigers, and we are not talking accidentally....

Mosquitos, snakes ,dogs and of course humans are more dangerous than tigers or elephants but people tend to forget that we are animals too...
CS Lewis wrote a short and chilling bit about people being animals. In the book Prince Caspian, the brothers were helping cut up a carcass when they'd had to shoot a bear that came after them - but a wild one, not one of the talking ones in Narnia that are close in intelligence and manners to the humans. Anyway, one of the girls mused about what it would be like in their own world (this one) if men turned into animals on the inside, and you couldn't tell because they appeared just like other men.
That is what I think of now when I hear about mass shootings and other cases of violence of person against person. Many among us have become animals and we can't see it until such things happen...
