An interesting find not a million miles away from me. There is a lot of Roman history here, particularly locally.
When I lived in a small hamlet, some years ago, there was a dig not far from us. When it was finished they displayed all the finds next to the dig. My kids were desperate to go round.
They were so disappointed at the complete and utter lack of complete trex skeletons. In truth, it was mostly sea shells, bits of stick, and broken stone utensils.
Needless to say they are al adults now, and have nil interest in history.
You remind me of a summer job I took once. Previously I would never have thought it would be bearable scraping away at the earth with a little trowel. Maybe it was because the weather was so good that summer and the crowd I was working with were so diverse yet so friendly but it was one of the best times at work I have ever had. I learnt quite a bit about the practice of archaeology too and it was the site of a Roman shop.

I had a patient who used to do that for a living. He travelled around the country. He liked the job, but it ruined his knees.

Because of hiostorians and archaelogists, we have progammes on television that show the past in vibrant colour and make history interesting and exciting. We have so much because of our ancesters and nature and the whatnot. My good friend - Nick - is an expert at history and really knows his stuff.
The past is truly interesting and enjoyable to find out about.
I do like those programs in which old films have been coloured in but I also must admit that, some old films in particular, actually make things seem more real to me when left in their original greyscale or sepia.

I have mixed emotions about that. I think it's fun to see them in color once and then if I watch it again, back to the original black and white.

How old is the English language compared to others?
Like most other languages, it has evolved. It has a stong base in Latin but there are many terms from other earlier languages too as there is, for instance, Greek here and there as well as it's more local base. My knowlege of Asian languages is virtually non-existant so I cannot compare any of those but I think Chinese is completely different. Most of the Euopean languages, including the Cyrillic character languages, have very similar roots so are similar in many ways. I cannot comment on Scandinavian either though as I know little of them. In the same way, I know little of Welsh or Gaelic. They would probably be older as they are pre-Roman, hence Latin so much modern English would be different without the Latin influence.
I see from this link that modern English has many roots:

Being able to speak German is impressive. I found German easier at school than French. I LOVE French but am much better at German. Still, I can translate basic French. I couldn't hold a complex conversation, though.

Three years with online German and I am no way near fluent. That says something I think. If I lived a third of that time in Germany, I bet I would be much more proficient.
But then I might not know that adjectives of "der" words take weak endings.

I'm learning Hebrew - slowly. The Hebrew alphabet is becoming a bit more familiar, and having a transliteration is quite helpful. I like to learn the pronunciation that way (through the transliteration), but I do think that as I learn the original alphabet and what letters have what sounds, I should be able to pick them out as I see the words written in the original language.
I bought myself one (the least expensive, for a start!) in a series of seven books that have three lines of text: original Hebrew, transliteration, and English. I really just wanted the first two lines, but it's helpful to know where I am in the book so far with the English there. Eventually I'd love to be able to hide the English from myself! (Title and chapter headings are in Hebrew only, no transliteration. There's a first challenge!)
Apart from some French that I learn't in school I have not been formally taught any other languages apart from English. For some reason somewhat obscured by time though I have a fascination for cyrillic text so have learnt, to a large extent, the transliteration of the characters between English. It does help to understand Russian (and Ukraine these days) to some extent. That's how I know Russian is not as alien as it appears and is fairly understandable. It is a western language (as compared with Asian languages). I like to try to read the Ukraine and Russian text on the placenames, graffiti and banners on the news. There are differences between the two though which I don't know well.
Further to that I did learn quite a lot of Egyptian hyroglyphics when I was planning a painting some years back so that I could write the symbols correctly in meaning. It's not something I use though so I have forgotton most of it.

I guess the Phoenician’s 26-character alphabet was the greatest accomplishment. I get why pictorial representations came earlier. But simple is always better.

Russian is an incredible language. My brother's girlfriend is fluent in it. I also think learning Hebrew is rather cool, Rebecca! Good luck with it. I hadn't known before anyone to learn that language. Again, it is my loss to speak only English.
To me, if we chose to live in any country, we better be able to speak, read and write that country's language decently and should consider that language is our first language.
I really want to learn Spanish but besides my native language and English, I can speak, read and write three other languages decently.

I wish i learned other languages, but again I have enough trouble with english...

I think I can make you feel better Karen, I can't speak, read or write any language perfectly!

I may not speak a foreign language BUT I have advanced English skills: both written and spoken. Writing correct English is very important to me: and I am getting more and more advanced.
