lol sorry, cherry, this is a difference based on where we live!
I mean, we have comforters, which are like duvets, but we don't have "comforter covers", which is what a duvet cover would be for us, so I have noooo idea what it is LOL I can't wrap my head around it.
Basically duvets are full of fillers, to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. If they were washed, they may be ruined, but at the very least they would take up your entire washing machine and take days to dry. So we put them inside bags [duvet covers]. Thus they never need cleaning as we just wash the cover and air the duvet.
According to wiki, a duvet is called a comforter in the usa.

We don't have covers for our comforters, that I know of. We just wash them.. how often really depends on what it's made of, some of ours are like thick blankets so they wash/dry easily (some have stuffing like a cheap pillow).
But they do not keep me cool.... duvets sound better lol what's in the duvet that can make you cool in summer?
They still use comforters. I bet they don't wash them after every visit.... which is gross to think about. I guess I am glad I don't use hotels often.. At least they wash the sheets/blankets, usually.... Hm... okay, I need to stop thinking about this.. ick lol

I don't see it happening lol I mean, we don't even have to touch the comforters, so they can stay clean for a very long time regardless. The sheets add the layer between us and the comforter, and that is most important to wash. I just don't know if I trust ALL hotels to even wash their sheets and comforters after EVERY visit. Some hotels are disgusting!!
AND, you can't help touching your comforter every time you pull it up or down, or if you put an arm down or even sit on the bed.
I'll share my secret.. I don't make my bed much, so it's always the sheets I touch over the comforter LOL I also do not sit on the comforter, I sit on the mattress sheet.. or whatever it is called. This is making me realize how little I know about bed terms lol
Put an arm down? As in putting your arms over the comforter? I put my entire body under it, maybe I'm weird, hehe =p
Well, duvet covers aren't necessary here because our comforters are decorative usually. We'd have to buy plain comforters and then put them in a duvet cover! lol I don't ever really see plain comforters.
Interesting difference, though.. I never thought of this kind of thing when I am making my own bed.. I assumed it's all the same everywhere lol
