Amazing at those depths...

I saw one here last summer. Too quick for my camera... We have a small island designated as a heron sanctuary (Waldie Island www.trailsintime.org/?request=waldie2 ), but they hadn't been around for years.

That's a great picture, very complete. It would make a good jigsaw puzzle. 

That's interesting. I know that some fish at depth have lights but I do wonder how useful it's eyes are. You wouldn't think there would be much light for them to be useful.

He does look rather mean doesn't he?

I find it interesting when some animals, or birds in this case, are essentially immune to toxins which are deadly to others.

Wow!!!   How cool is that?!  I can see parrot chat rooms in our future...

Or at least in pairs if having them as pets. They wouldn't be the first that benefit from having at least one friend that is similar to them.

With all the bad news about ...
I wanted to share this. We saw a pair of grebes nesting on our dog walk , for weeks we have watched them, we have seen them swapping shifts , we have seen them huddled against bad weather and high water and we feared the worst when other chicks hatched and theirs didnt.. We gave up hope, but they didnt..

This morning we heard them making the most delightful noises and giving each other beak rubs.. Then we saw it,  one  chick has survived, they are offering it tiny morsels of food..
If you can see pride in bird parents I think this is it.. They are very adoring of their baby and it shows..
