Kinda long, sorry
Yep the subject line is correct... my son is 11 years old, will be 12 in a few months. he was adopted from the country of Georgia at age of 2.5months. I was single at the time. however I have no family medical history, other than there's 2 half siblings and he was born kinda small for being a 3rd pregnancy, apparently birth mom hid the pregnancy. I was married for a couple of years but honestly my ex wasnt a lot of help with the kid. he was quick to just give into him and that doesnt work.
he started the "terrible 2's" at age 18months and hasnt stopped since. At age 2 checkup it was noticed he may have a speech delay. dr said lets wait. Age 3 year check up, yep still delayed but no serious yet. Was I think referred for a hearing test either that or it was age 4 he had the hearing test. But school district wouldnt accept for preschool as it wasnt serious or delayed enough. At age 4 check, yep definitely delayed and has hardly made any progress since the prior year. Referred again for school services and this time qualified before the testing was even half over. He's been in special ed ever since and had speech therapy up until Oct 2013. Originally he was in self contained classroom for special ed due to the high level of special needs.
He also had behavioral issues at an early age and noticeable. his daycare told me he was throwing rocks the size of a large grapefruit at other children and nothing thinking twice. dr says oh he's just a little more aggressive that most boys his age... no big issue.. yeah ok. took a while but I was able to get a referral to a children's hospital, however HUGE backlog and wait list. wanted a behavioral assessment but all I could get him for was a possible autism disorder evaluation. I knew it wasnt but we got in. and they confirmed the possibility of ADHD and ODD at age 4.5 years. then we were referred to the University hospital for a developmental delay evaluation. multiple appts with multiple specialists. Came back confirmed ADHD, developmental delay in multiple areas, borderline ODD. Was able to get him in with a pediatrician who understood ADHD really well, almost didnt, but did and he's been on meds for ADHD since either age 5 or 6. tried a couple of behavioral therapy visits but they were out of the way and meant me taking almost a whole day off for a single appt so that wasnt going to work. prior to starting meds, we tried counseling for him but honestly play therapy I didnt see working. and he was putting items out his bedroom window... from a 2nd floor.
meds do work fairly well... his dose has been updated and increased due to size changes as he gets older. but noticed that every time we see a new dr, since we're moved from WA to CA and other items, we get different diagnosis each time. and to me at least there are so very few specialists for pediatric mental health without HUGE waitlists. unless of course you're on state assistance then you get to see their staff right away. which is almost frustrating... sorry you dont qualify for our services since your income is exceeded, sorry you dont qualify for services because you're not on state assistance. sorry you qualify for our services, your son is old enough. sorry you dont qualify for services, your son's condition isnt serious enough... Went thru that back in WA and am going thru that now in CA. I'm trying to get him help and its like sorry nope, sorry nope, sorry nope. and no we dont have health insurance. since I work as a temp, I'm eligible for medical coverage but its super expensive and pays nothing. so instead of paying $600-800+/month for just the insurance premium, I pay $40 for an office visit and $200-$250 for his monthly meds
but things at school this past month have been just ridiculous. today he accidentally had a chocolate liquor candy, very small, in his pocket, someone noticed, teacher told the office and now he has an hr detention tomorrow. last week I was called 3 separate times for incidents. one was he may have flipped off a couple kids, he says no he didnt. but the asst principal is like he'll talk to my son and then there will be consequences. to me thats says it all.. doesnt matter what my kid says. then another suspension at the end of the week. someone said something mean to him and he pushed them and it went from there... I see him being singled out not helped...
its been going on for abt a month. on his way home last month (a one mile walk) he stopped at the elementary school he passes (he's middle school) and a girl he knows and her 2 friends approach him and ask him why he's been poking her in class with a pencil. again my sons story isnt that. so they apparently started fighting. no one went and got an adult. 6-8 boys from his school come up on it... again no one is getting an adult but instead they're cheering on the girl. during the course of the fight my son gets kicked in the groin, kicked in both kidneys, kicked in the face and hit in the head with a cell phone. I'm told he's the aggressor and she was being defensive. my son had to go see the dr a few days later due to symptoms. apparently the girl had been wearing pointed boots. but my son is the one who's suspended not the girl. its my understanding she didnt get into any trouble. plus 2-3 boys used their phones to video tape it and yep they posted it. So they were in trouble for cyberbullying.
but its just been one thing or another ever since then. oh you were chasing the girl around when you should... detention. you did this.. dentention. someone says you did this,, detention. or loss of points. an hour of OT (aka detention) is 2 points.. I'm like this is getting ridiculous...
