One morning when I came in, I asked one of the men " how are you doing this morning?" as a courtesy, his answer to me was " why do you ask"? That was the last time I was friendly to the staff.
White or not, male or female, I've also come across this answer for quite a few times at work. The only difference was that when I asked, they answer either good or not too bad followed by "why, why do you ask?" It depends on the situation and the context, too. I can understand of your reactions to that staff. He was probably having a bad morning. Hmmm, possibly missed a shag This kind of behaviour would take me aback on my 30s. Now that I am much older, I've learned when to give these kind of people of their own medicine. If this happens to me nowadays, I would tell the person/s that they look like a mess. Their attitude reflects it.
Unfortunately, I am in a position where I can't make that kind of comment, I could try to sound compassionate and caring but I actually did not care and did not bother to pretend.

It's a nice feeling when you find out that you really don't care over that sort of situation. It's actually very enabling.

This is why you're in a postition of authority.
You've nailed it.
But that's the way the world is, James: if you don't look like you deserve that desk, you're not going to get that desk.
I think that man thought he would made me feel bad or embarrassed but I came across people like him directly or indirectly a few times in my working life.
You would not believe a few other situations that I had to deal with.

Dealing with people is not easy: it takes confidence and emotional strength. I couldn't be a manager or a boss. They have to say hard words: without feeling guilt. Like when someone is being sacked or told their behaviour is unacceptable.
Not easy.

I never sacked anyone. . Usually they left, as they could see the writing on the wall. I did decline to renew a few contacts though.
We once hired a man called Eddie, lovely friendly guy but he didnt have his P45 with him, he said his old boss had prominsed to send it on.. After a week it still hadnt arrived and so I contacted his old boss. He had mentioned them when appilying for the job with us..
Turned out the old boss thought that Eddie had taken a months leave to go to Ireland to be with his sick mother...
Poor Eddie, he lost two jobs that day.
We also learned no matter how friendly someone is...no papers no job.

I never sacked anyone either, HR does it. I work for a very formal environment most of the time, there is a thing called insubordination here, especially when it's rude and nasty.

Same with me. HR does it. however I have recommended that someone being terminated. It always bothers me when I do but sometimes I really had no choice.
