I had to look up 'Happy Festivus", and while I appreciate their pov, I wonder how many jobs would be lost if xmas was not as commercial as it is.
Or even livelihoods, as many businesses do peak trading at this time of year.
Theres commercial and then theres commercial. Yes everyone has to eat and why not eat a little bit nicer or special than at the rest of the year? But do we need the amount of food we are pursueded to buy?
Guess how many mince pies are wasted each year..... try 74 million... Thats disgusting especially while maybe not half a mile from our own front door someone is hungry.
Then there are the gifts... Do we really need the stuff we get? Another purfume /socks/shawl/ earrings/ These days I like to sit back and think abut what Im giving. I try to buy gifts that are long term useful or needed or an experience. This year I've sent my son the money for a years family ticket to the zoo so he can take the children there whenever he likes.
Anyone who is on FB doesnt get a Christmas card from me (except mum) instead I make a nice photo like the one I shared here and publish it on FB with the message that the blank space on their shelf where my paper card would have been is instead feeding someone or saving a dog as we take th card and stamp money double it and donate it.
I understand the economy has to be kept turning but there are limits to the amount of waste and damage we can excuse in the name of Christmas

I don't altogether disagree with you. My pov was nudged in a different direction one day when I was ranting at the waste of time and space that letter box drop off leaflets were. 95% of mine don't get past me reading the top line before they go in the recycle bin.
But then I reflected on how many people got an income from that leaflet.
To name just a few
The advertiser [pizza] the designer the ad agency staff the paper manufacturing staff the lorry driver the printer the recycler the ink manufacturer the entire supplying industry of the pizza
and I am sure there are more I have not thought of.
....and how many dependents are those people supporting?

I agree it's not something we can change on our own the economy is too wide and driven by consumerism for us to make any difference on our own.
Maybe it's time as soon to start looking at changing the way we as society behave and how society can make changes that do not impact on the individual but that benefit both commerce and the planet.

Have a lovely Christmas. Take the time to relax as best you can
That's a lovely tree Karen. It puts our tiny one in the shade. I have never been in a warm / hot place at Christmas to hear much so it would be a bit strange to me.

Jen, it did and still does take some getting used to. I really miss the snow that we always had for Christmas. One thing though, the people here seem to decorate their homes much more than the people up north. It helps bring that Christmas feeling up.

This stood out for me: it isn't just a leaflet. It is a product that many people have contributed to and made an income from. It's like magazines: they aren't just a few pages quickly cobbled together: it is a project that 100's of people have worked on.
It goes to show the things we don't even consider important can be important to someone else.

..... and how many people need a share of the few pennies that the leaflet actually cost, before being binned unread.
