I use 'pet' myself, and I am happy with people calling me most anything friendly. Though I do find the local use of 'cock' or 'cocker' rather strange.
The only one that springs to mind that I dislike, is what the ex used to call me - "kid". That always grated, but ho hum, maybe I should have said something, but he started early, and I figured he would stop, or the relationship would fizzle out. I didn't realise we were going to get married, and I was going to be called kid for the rest of my life.

I never use pet names: I always use a person's Christian name AND in full. Say - for instance - I wouldn't call my brother Andrew, Andy or Joanna, Jo: unless they are always addressed that way. I also feel it important to remember everyone's Christian name. It is polite and shows a great deal of respect.
But that's the way the world is, James: if you don't look like you deserve that desk, you're not going to get that desk.
I don't mind most things as long as they are used in the right context. Interestingly I seldom use any myself, not even names. Maybe I don't speak a lot lol
what about nicknames? you guys got those? i get called hairball at work. lol!
Why hairball?
It started out as Mary (my real name) then it went to just Mare. From there it developed into Hair. Then MareBear. Then one day I was having a COPD episode and we were laughing cuz I sounded like a cat with a hairball and a nickname was born. i don't mind it. i use it in some of my video games.

That's funny.
My ex's mother was famous at the hospital where she worked after telling everyone in the canteen, where she worked, that her cat Thomas had furry balls.
Why? You know it's interesting because I had a boss tell me once that if someone gives you a nickname that means they like you. I know the people in the cafeteria like me. One gal doesn't nickname anyone she doesn't like. I have to really like someone in real time in order to give them a nickname. Usually requires knowing them better personally which I rarely do anymore.

I don't really use pet names or nicknames. I don't care if people use them on me unless it's not nice lol
I remember the ex husband of my SO's sister called me kiddo sometimes.. which I thought was gross because I was only about one year younger than his wife, and he was 10 years older than her...

Using a nickname when you don't know someone - or have just been introduced to someone - is offensive and tacky. I believe you have to know someone well and like them in order to use a nickname. Kiddo is just one nickname I hate. It is insulting, too. You have to be very sure the person likes you before you give them a nickname.
But that's the way the world is, James: if you don't look like you deserve that desk, you're not going to get that desk.
I mostly haven't moved in circles in which nicknames are common. As far as I know I don't have one at the moment but sometimes people use them in speech away from the actual person. I don't mind them if they are not derogatory.

Using a nickname on someone you barely know can be seen as being nasty. It is making an assumption the person will accept that nickname when they have no desire to be called anything other than their Christian name.
You can see my point-of-view!

I was called rat by my brother and his friends because I was a tattle tale. I was always honest and followed rules, so I would tell on anyone who was being dangerous or careless basically, which my brother and his friends were lol they did a lot of things they shouldn't have or things that could get them hurt, of course I was going to tell someone!

Tricky one that. You were the good guy, and the bad guy.

What was your parents pov?
I never felt like the bad guy. I will always do what I feel is right even if people don't like me for it. Maybe people shouldn't do bad things if they don't want someone to find out or tell on them?? lol they obviously know what they are doing is wrong.
My parents always liked my honesty, so IDK. They usually didn't want my brother doing the things he did lol
