Another strange Dutch one... Een held op sokken ...A hero in socks..
meaning someone who pretends to be brave but is actually scared..Its thought to come from a time when everyone wore clogs.. Now you cant run away fast in clogs so you would kick them off and run away in your thick socks...
Oh I see the sense in that one... George can get very grumpy if you wake him lol...
I looked that one up
"The phrase “let sleeping dogs lie” is a reminder not to bring unnecessary risk or danger upon oneself. The saying originates from the idea that waking sleeping dogs was dangerous, especially if done suddenly. This applies to an even greater extent to george who once awoken would likely get very grumpy."
Luckily I never believed that. Who wants curly hair?
My grandad used to say "That will put hairs on your chest" Just as well he was having fun, coz I thought that having a hairy chest must be a good thing.
Very fitting atm... Another Dutch one 'achter het behang plakken' (to paste someone behind the wallpaper...) When somone is really really annoying and you would rather just not have to see them.

I hear the word f*ck used so often in everyday speech: my sister, my friends... you name it, it's used. I seldom use that word myself, but can understand its meaning when used in anger. Obviously.
Swearing is so common in everyday life: even celebrities like to swear!
Who invented swearing, by the way? Where does it originate from?

Google says:
"In English, swear words and curse words like shit have a Germanic root, as likely does f**k, though damn and piss come from Old French and ultimately Latin. The more technical and polite alternatives are often Latin in origin, such as defecate or excrete (for shit) and fornicate or copulate (for f**k)."
and
"Fart, as it turns out, is one of the oldest rude words we have in the language: Its first record pops up in roughly 1250, meaning that if you were to travel 800 years back in time just to let one rip, everyone would at least be able to agree upon what that should be called."
