Our local woods are encircled by one road and three lanes. The lanes have no houses. The amount of fly tipping from these lanes into our woods is disgraceful. I have some understanding, but not much, for dumping large stuff like fridges. But a lot of it is in bin bags, that could be left out for the dustbin man.
We getvery few things like fridges dumped. The reason is a disposal tax you pay on any electrical item when you buy it.. This ' tax' pays for the removal of your old appliances either at the dump or via the company bringing your new appliance..
Our shops used to collect for a nominal sum, when you bought a replacement, but that went out of the window with covid. Mattresses are quite an issue here too.

People who dump their rubbish in the countryside too!

This I have never heard of. Fly tipping? All as I can picture is flicking a fly over on its back and it spins around and around while it tries to fly away.

It's basically just dumping one's landfill waste on any empty lot.

The problem with that is when people buy things second hand like of ebay, or from someone local. They likely dump their old one as there is no exchange. It is obviously possible for many to get to the council dump but lots of these places have been closed. It can be a long way to get to one now. Our nearest is actually in the city itself. Not always the most trouble free place to get to, even if you have transport.
It is also reasonable to take or pay to have taken something like a cooker or a fridge but if you have a toaster or similar sized thing the rules on bin waste state that you cannot put them in and they must be disposed of like other electrical waste. I doubt many people pay money to have a toaster collected or make a journey to the recycling centre with it. It just gooes in the bin. That said, if you buy something like a fridge or similar big item many firms do say they will collect the old one and any other small electrical items at the same time. You have to watch them though as I found when I bought a new fitted cooker once. The delivery guys were refusing to take away my old one which had been uninstalled and I almost had to go online to the company site to show them their collection policy.

Small items can be a pain , recently in addition to the textile glass and paper recycling bins outside supermarkets we have seen an increase in the number of places to retun batteries and small electrical things as well as light bulbs, so you can now take your defective hairdryer or toatser in your shopping bag and drop it off at the supermarket. Another project thats started up here is repair shops.. You take you defective item to a place where volunteers repair it , they are all trained people nothing dodgy and everything gets a proper check over before being returned.
They are free accessable and they are spreading and are now in 30 countries across the world.

Thats disgusting and I hate to say that a big problem in the US too.
I blame the councils for it. They don't make it easy to use the proper dumps. There should be free, and easy, access for everybody. Even those who are being paid to take it to the dumps.
You're living in a good economy, Cassie: your government seems to be doing a good job.
Its not all milk and honey. We used to have grofvuil ( big rubbish) they came once a month and took anything you couldn't get rid of yourself sofa table fridge or garden swing... It was free.. now its only 4 times a year and you have to pay €10.
The council's are shooting themselves in the foot, by making it harder to get rid of rubbish the odds of fly topping increase.

I used to live in a small village, and every month, the parish council would pay for large skip. It was usually full pretty quickly, and I don't remember seeing any fly tipping.

Waste management is one of the most important subjects to broach. Every where all over the world needs effective waste management. In fact, it is a profitable business.
I could go on about it but I'll just say I definitely recycle.
Annoying, being seated at a restaurant and then being forgotten. No one comes to take your order and you have to go looking for someone.
Years agoI used to get that so often I got a complex about it but nowaday I make sure they know I'm there. There is one place we have been before though that I avoid like the plague as their service has been poor every time we have visited, even when ownership changed.

Bad service was the norm when I was a kid. Shopkeepers were downright rude.

I remember pretty much the opposite in most cases. Most seemed to go out of their way to be helpful. Nowadays it's more like they have no time for anyone although when I ask for help they are mostly very helpful. A sign of the times as they have to rush around and they appear worse than they are.

We knew the names of our local shopkeepers and they knew all of their regular customers. The greengrocer used to offer a sheet of news paper to line the shopping basket if we bought potatoes ( no plastic bags) and he would always give us kids a little apple or wedge of orange for being good and doing the shopping for mama.. Now days I am sick of the number of 15/16 yr olds employed cheaply by shops who look at you as if you have a cheek for being in the shop and just shrug or say 'I dunno' if you dare ask anything.
In the woods there is an area where dogs are allowed off lead and area where there are bridle paths and an area for ATB's.... then there is the nature area. Thats where we walk with onlead dogs, but some people obviously cant see the sign posts ( sarcasm) and we get faced with paths like this... Honestly sometimes I feel a right idiot for obeyng the rules when its quite clear no one else does. imgur.com/a/rpLcOTx

I can remember that you were only served after all the adults had been served. When choosing you were often told to hurry up, and the request to see something was usually grumpily followed up by "Are you going to buy it?"

Yes, those areas are tricky to walk through / around. I was thinking that they may be one great disadvantage in a country with a huge cycling population such as yours. Here, at least locally, it's not so much cyclists as 4x4's but I think the farmers get more annoyed at them and take prompt action.

I should have said the ATB and dogs off lead are not allowed in the nature area thats where we see deer and black woodpeckers etc.
The letter box I ordered which wasnt the right size, ( they quoted the box size not the actual letter box! Duh..
I asked to send it back and they said GLS will collect from you, what day is good .I said Friday thinking Id get a time slot as you normally do and GLS said it will be between 9am and 5pm..Well ok I was having a home day anyway but even o 9-5 is a bit vague..
Worse is that they didnt turn up at all..
So Ive emailed the company and told them. I havent paid for the darn thing so no skin off my nose but I dont want it cluttering up my hall any longer than it has to.

Modern standards and specifications, and even modern technology still does not prevent people or companies letting you down.
